. . ' E yA ‘vance the mining interests are entirely differ—_—_-4imes-that amount-remains-to-be extracted. — = 16 ory Maung ae ce -and Encouraging. Mr. Joseph H. Northey, the well-known chiorinator and metallurgist of this city, recently returned from a protracted visit to Oakland and Séu Francisco. His visit com-. bined both business and pleasure. Mr, Northey is known to possess some very intelligent and comprehensive ideas on mining and correlative subjects, and whenever he finds himself in commercial and slistio centers he is indefatigable i in ‘his eftorts to ascertain the status quo of the mining industry. Consequently when interviewed by a TRANSCRIPT repurter today he expressed some.very pungent views regarding the futare prospects of the mining industry of this State. » He said : “In all my visite to San Francigco I never witnessed such energy and enthusiasm as are now being displayed in mining circles, It looks like # repetition of the halcyon days of Comstock mining when everybody was eager to invest in stocks and when it apparently showed a lack of courage’ and enterprise to withhold investment. The only ptible difference is this: During thé height of the Comstock excitement shrewd manipulators and stock-brokers made the business of stock dealing a gambling proposition, and filched the innocen’ and wary ones alike. They cared but little for the successful development of the mines in whose stock they were dealing. ‘Their chiet aim was to ‘‘bull” or ‘‘bear”’ as the circumstances would warrant. Fortunately for the anining industry ef California, this spirit does not prevail. ‘The stockholders of San Francisco and other cities are cognizant of the fact that such conduct would not be’ tolerated and could, uot long succeed, and for-this reason there is a strong disposition to regard mining as a legitimate: business the same as all other classes gf, business. The éthods adopted at the it time to -ad~ ent. to those in vogue in the early ’70, and this must be regarded as one of the causes which have broaght mining into grace and favor where it was eratwhile viewed with disapprobation, Men are investing in mines eae. and_ regard their investments judic— y, who could not be induced to look at a mine a few years ago. I attribute this changed sentiment to the value and stability of the auriferous veins of this State, to the great depth: which they are known to attain when compared to other localities, and also} -to the superior management of quartz mines when compared to earlier times, The rapid strides that have been made in the practical and technical education of mining engineers is chiefly responsible for the rehabilitation and successful operation of many mines that were once abandoned as being worthless, It is a Well known fact that some of the -gichest gold mines in the State today were at one time relinquished as possessing no intrinsic or commercial value,” Mr. Nerthey was asked by the reporter to state the locality in which the greatest interest now centers.and he promptly replied “California.” The chief interest is centered in the mines of this State, It is true that the Kaffir craze in South Africa ‘and thé mushroom boom of Cripple Oreek,. Oolo., occupied the attention of San Francisco investors for awhile, but since the re‘action and consequent inflation has taken place the people are congratulating themeelves on the fact that but a small amount of money was invested in those districts. Notwithstanding the fact that this glorious State has already produced over $1,300, 000,000, the impression is prevalent that the surface has only been scratched, comparatively speaking, and that more than ten It is this which impels a feeling of confidenee’ in the mining industry and which causes such & general and increased investment,” In reply to & quention as to. the position of Nevada county in mining circles he said: “This county is held in high esteem by [ mining’ men everywhere, -There are a great} ‘mén who think that nowhere are the ymatahces for judicious investment so in Nevada county. Every con“ expressed while in the mets pate a large influx of capital in tion;” Mery Nerthey said that in Ook the excitement is runvihg high and everybody is anxious to invest in, mines regard Appointed Agent. . and her songs were in keeping: ‘with her from Prank Valegra as Tony Faust. sci is possessed of a splendid Voice and . ‘innocence.
