psf Ove! _ REVADA CITY, NEVADA O. CALIFORNIA BROWN & CALKINS. eotton mills confirm the statements ‘ ofthe South, by reason of their lower ‘land and yet are earning at the rate ' peeds. The seeds fell over town and cate sasapiea! seat IN tee cae ~“@ead if I don't speak the tru St ae THE TRANSCRIPT. Established Sept. 6, 1200. by Nat. P. Brown & Co. ished veni xee 5 Soetuye and Loge! Holmiays yy. : 16 R. P. BROW. poms sit. U, 8. CALKINS. Eutered at the Postoffice at Nevade City as -econd-class matter. Tere2Paone No. 4. NOT WORTH CONSIDERATION. i. a Voc mela ‘The recent reports from southern which have been made in justification of the reduction of the wages of cottonmill employes in the factories of New England: It is shown that cotton mills wages, cheap fuel, long hours of labor, “proximity to cotton fields, and other causes, are able to manufacture goods more.cheaply than those of New. Engof 121g per cent. per annum ‘on their investment, while the New England mille.are able to declare but 314 per cent. profit on their capital invested. The people who are croaking about the proposed reduction of wages in New Engiand under the Dingley law should remember that the Dingley law applies in the South as well as it, does in New England and that it’ is local conditions and circumstances which are forcing the manufacturers of one section to do things which those of another section are not compelled to do. All cotton manufacturers in the United States and England are’ now considerably embarrassed by the fact that the cotton mills in China, Japan, and India have increased greatly in number and are of course able to obtain labor at rates which are only a fraction of those paid in the United States, but aside from . this the.assumption that the Dingley law has any relation to the wages of any one section of the United States and not to those paid in another section is, of course, not worthy of serious consideration. cathe A Rainfall of Seeds. Some days ago the province of Macerata, in Italy, was the scene of an extraordinary phenomenon. Half an hour before sunset an Uumense number of small blood colored clouds covered the sky. About an hour later a cyclone storm burst, and immediately the air became filled with myriads of small country, covering the ground to a deptb of about half an iach. The next day the whole of the scientists of Macerata were abroad in order to find some explanation. Professor Cardinali, a celebrated Italian naturalist, stated that the seéds were of the geuus cercis, commonly called Judas tree, and that they belonged to an order of leguminosse tound only in central Atrica or the Antilles. It was found,-upon examination, that a great number of the seeds were actually in the first stage of germination.— Golden Penny. Bravery. **There’s such a difference in bray ery,’’ said the dentist. ‘‘I°don’t call it brave when a patient who doesn’t fee} the pain makes no outcry. It doesn’t hurt him, and there’s no merit in his not showing it, but when I have a patient who is really and truly sensitive, to whom every touch of the instrament is torture, but who just bears it all and never makes a sound—that’s. courage, anid it’s of the right sort too. Gne man who comes to me pretty often is just as stolid and indifferent as*you choose, no matter what I do 'to him. Only the other day I took out two nerves from his teeth. Never a flinch from the man. Just to try him, I showed the nerves to him after I'd taken them out, a sight at . which anybody might have been excused for fainting. He never flicked an eve lash. He regarded thenr quite as dispassiongtely as be would a puir of fishing worms, and after awhile he said. ‘Don’t you think I’m pretty brave, doctor? ‘Not much I don’t,’ said I, ‘for you don’t feel it. That isnot bravery. Brav. ery is when you really suffer and vet make no outward show of it.’ How car 1 tell when a patient does feel it? Ah, they can‘t hide that. It’s temperament, and it reveals itsclf in a thousand clinching, paling, trembling ways. To suifer them and to make-no sign—that is truc bravery, and let me tell you it is an almost altogether feminine attribute. ’’— New York Sun. Caustic Judge Hawkins, Juige, Hawkins once had to sentence an old swindler and gave him seven years. The mun in the dock squirmed and whined, *‘Oh, my Lord, I'll. never live half the time!’ Hawkins took another lock at him and answered, ‘‘! don’t think it is at all désirable that you should.’’The formality of asking a newly couvicted prisoner if be bad anything to _ gay why sentence should not be passed gepon him brought another characteristic retort from the judge. A prisoner iv tlese circumstances usually either says wvotbing or curses at large in his rage, Lut oue’of them struck a theatrical] posture and with bis right hand in the air abouted: ‘May the Aen strike me} at ! Tam in. nocent of this crime.'’ Judge Hawkins said nothing for about a minute, when, after glancing at the clock, he fulminated in his most impressive tones, “since the Almighty bas not thought Gt to intervene, I will pow proceed to “Whut's de mattah wid you, Juley Ann?
