He is said to be in conference with the Democratic leaders. to get the city streets in proper repair . for winter. Ordinance No. 151 is the same as was recently adopted in Grass Valley. It requires all plumbers to give a bond in the sum of $100 for the faithful compliance with its terms, upon the filing of which bond with the City Clerk the applicant will be entitled toa license. All plumbers mus’ register their names and places of basiness with the Superintendent ot Sewers, and all plumbing work is to be. under bis supervision. The Board adjourned till next Monday evening to which time the election of a Superintendent of Sewers was postponed. It is expected the salary for the place will be about $75 a month, and there are a large member of applicants. DIAMOND DRILL PROSPECTING That-Method of Testing Mining Ground Pronounced Unreliable. Virginia City Chronicle: It is said that the United Verde mine in Arizona, the major share in which is owned by Senator Clark of Montans, has been prospected to a depth of 2,000 feet with the diamond drill to determine the ea-. tent of its ore bodies. ‘The Chronicle claims such method of prospecting would be very valuable if it could only be relied upon. But it cannot. Once the drill passes out of sight its course . in the formation is thereafter sre guesswork. There is practically nothing to guide it through the foraricns and its course may ‘be deflected. ‘The core which it throws out is, therefore of uncertain value as determining what is actually in the ground, sn exact knowledge of which it is desirable to secure. ; Before the lower levels of the Com8 ock were abandoned and allowed to tlood, the ground was perforated for hundreds of feet in every direction in search of new bonanzas, but the core of the diamond drill was invariably barren. If it could be relied upon tuat the bore made by the drill took.a true course each time, then it could be said with certainty that there were no more bonapzas within the reach of modern methods of mining in the lode. But just what it is no one Can Say. , And it is the uncertainty about the direction taken by the prospecting drill, then, whicb gives men faith still in the value of the Comstock at lower depths than any yet reached. The safer way to prospect is that which is most in vogue—by shaft, drift aud tunoel. Even these sometimes miss the mark, althougb exact knowledgeis possessed FrankFort, Feb. 1, 12:15 p.m.—Goebel is slightly better. He is resting more comfortable just now. 12:30 p. No business of importance was transacted. South African Names. Take Joubert. The Daily Mail tells its readers to call it “Choo-bare,” but Household Words give itas “Yowbert.” The former is a somewhat ineffectual attempt to indicate the French pronunciation; the latter is Dutch. We read about Viljoen, but few pronounce it properly, with the ending “joen” like the “yune” in picayune,” “Fill-yune.” One often, perhaps generally, hears President Krueger and the Tugela river pronounced incorrectly with soft “g” instead of hard. There are two ways of misprououncing Mafeking, which are both commonly heard. Oue is in two syllables (rhyming with “safe king”), the other has the correct numver of syllables (three) but is falsely accented Mafeking.
