Fate of a Once Daring and Beautifu

There are several old-time Nevada Cityans
who had an acquaintance with the once

Woman by repute should read the following
sketch by a San Francisco corre: pondent,
with some interest :
Laura D. Fair was the woman who murdered A. P. Crittenden, a famous liwyer, in
the county-of San Francisco, in.1870, while
he_was crossing on tha ferryboat with his}
wife and several children from Oakland to
San Francisco, ~ :
Mrs. Fair was of Southern birth, and
possessed of much phy-ical and intellectual
beauty in those days. She had many admirers at that time, but Crittenden won her
frem all others by his generosity and uncommon devotion,
The woman swayed a peculiar influence

he sent his wife and children east on a protracted visit. At length, however, his better nature asserted itself, and when, he told
the Falr woman that he proposed’ writing
his wife to return she threatened to kill him.
Never dreaming that the female upon whom
he had lav shed a mint of money, and for
whom h+ had sacrified his social position,
would execute her threat, he, on that fatal
: day, went to meet his returning family.
She, however, proved true to her word, and
while Crittenden was merrily chattering
with his returning family aboard the ferryboat, the murideress, closely veiled, approached and fatally shot her benefactor
before the eyes of those deareat to him.
The woman was tried en an indictment
charging her with murder, before-the late

Will He Take to Drink?
Jenkins, the former Signal Service man at
San. Francisco, ‘‘took to drink” because
his prognostications of the weather were so
muéh at variance with the true state of
the elements. He was superceded by a new

his predictions than Jenkins did and it is
now in order for him to follow in the footsteps of Jenkins and go on a big drunk,

who can forecast the weather correctly.

Pennsylvania Engine Company, No. 2, is
talking of building = shed back of their
brick building, in the spring. It is very
necessary. that the company should have
additional room, As it is now there is no
way of drying. the hose after it has been
washed in stormy weather, and if reeled .up
wet the cotton-coverett hose will rot. With
& room in which @ hose rack can be erected
and a large stove put up, the hose can be
properly cared fer in a short time. This
would also do away with stretching hose
on the sidewalk to dry. The contemplated
building will be about fifty feet in depth,
the same width ‘as the brick building, and
two stories high. The upper story will be
fitted up for a banquet hall, and supply
}room, and be connected by a deor with the} —
upper story of the present building. It
will be a fire-~praof atructure, builf of cerrugated iron.
