San Francisco, Feb. 9, 1894. Epiror Transcript: Every concession of-our Midwinter Fair is about com plete and judging from indications it will be a grand success. E-.ery building presents a magnificent appearance and the interior of each is a echovl in itself. Crowds pass through the gates daily and many who claim Nevada City as ‘thome.” Among these being Dr. Klack and sister, Frank Mills, Chas, Tower, Albert Kidd,,Geo. Black, Miss Power and Barnum Power, who by the way, was looking anythirg but pleasant “because the ‘Model Restaurant” in the Fair grounds _. could give him nothing for dinuer but ham and eggs. As‘I passed into the Grand Court and gazed around I was almost bewildered and wondered what, shall I look -at first? Ah! I have it—y own county—the miners, for dear to the heart of every Californian is the mining camp, as it carries him back. tu the old days-of ’49; and not only to the Westerner is 1t an object of interest, but t the Eastern States this representation of wild Western life is peculiarly attractive. The old stage etarts every half hour from the Administration Building in the Fair. grounds and those wishing to experience a stage, ride of olden days have only to take’ a-seat in‘ this ancient vehicle, which besides its passengers, carries the mail and express tothe Camp. Before reaching the end of this journey you are hkely to experience many Vicissitudes such as a “‘tip over’ or “hold up.” ‘This stage is particularly an object of interest, regarded with awe by youths who are devoted readers of dime novel literature and who gaze with wondering eyes at the marks of the bullets in the sides, as they listen to stories told by the driver of*the~times when Black Bart, of outlaw notoriety, rifled the treasure box and escaped with considerable booty. Once in the (amp, if you reach there in safety, there aré various ways of spending the time. The stage draws up with a flourish before the is printed in large black letters the suggestive name: ‘‘Rest for the Weary.” Here one may refresh himself with bacon, fried potatees, mush, milk, etc. In this place it is well to pay promptly for your order, as the 3ize of the proprietor’s cowhide boots augurs ill for the unfortunate who might be ‘dead is the saloon where the drinks are served from behind a counter, which is a plank resting upon two barrels. This primitive bar, however, does not affect the quality of the whiskey. At the other end is the wheel of fortune, which in its turning has so often . brought destruction or death to its devotees. Of course gambling in earnest is not permittted on the Fair grounds, but.as no mining camp ever existed without its gambling hells this point has to be carried out and 1s "Those who wish to indulge in faro, poker, monte, roulette, etc., Lave only to procure gold dust, which is given to buy chips. These chips are the same that were used in the famous Ej] Dorado gambling hall, which flourished in San Francisco in '49. _ Two rough-looking musicians make the place lively with banjo and fiddle, and a barkeeper, whose costume consists principally of a ferocious-looking bowie knife aud revolver suspended from his belt, keeps order. Next door is the dance house, where one’ may see the fandango danced to inspiring music. The floor is nut polished: and the seats are boards, but one must not expect luxuries in a mining camp. Another feature is the theatre erected by Richard Foote, the well-known actor. The glamor of the footlights (tallow candles stuck in potatoes), lends a seductive enchantment to the beauties which adorn the stage, One may see any variety here, from vaudeville to the legitimate. It is quite likely that during the performance the costumes and property of this theatre may be seized for some debt contracted in an. adjoining camp, but that is expected of a barvstorming combination, and does not in any way mar the real excellence of the cntertainment. 3 At the end of the one main strect a fine height, and from the hills at the base. run sluices and flumes which’show how mining is carried on and old-time miners give realistic exhibitions of the use of axcient hydraulic apparatus. Cabins built of logs are ecattered here and there. Among them are those of John Mackay, Mark Twain, Major Dowslie and others-. In the museum many interesting relics are displayed, such as the saddle used by Jumes Marshall, the first gold rocker made by him, the spurs of Gen. Sutter, 4 rifled Wells Fargo treasure box, the charred remains of the cabin, occupied by James King, which was burned in a mysterious manner some years ago. A pack-train of myles winds slowly through the streets from the hills, and at sundown the old cannon used in Gen. Sutter's fort tells the residents of the Camp that it is time for supper. . The Mining Camp is seen at ite best advantage at night, when the flaring lights, music in the dance hall, the noisy crowd in the saloon, make one feel as if he were indeed far away from civilization and had been spirited back to the good J old days when the vigilantes were the law _. of the land. Indeed, the whole thing is remarkably realistic and one ef the most attractive. features of our Midwinter Fair. i Sap, + $Ge from Ammonia, Alum or any other acuiterant by Simmons Liver Regulator. — J. The thousands. of dollars disbursed by these companies is most of it soon put into circulation, and every kind of business is benefited. Guss Naffziger, who has been here on a visit to his mother and sisters, will leave tomorrow for San Francisco, where he is employed in an insurance office. Robins are said to be rather numerous in the woods near town and today numerous boys and numerous men, with numerous guns, were out popping away at the redbreasts. —The Good Templars will have exercises in the Festival Hall at the Midwinter Fair next Monday afternoon and evening.
