Nevada county lies a little north of the eentral line of California;-aud coutains« ti extends _from the summit. of the Sierra mountains, on the east live of the State, westward « distance of seventy miles to the Sacramento Valley. It is from twelve to twenty miles wide. The altitude is from two to three thousand feet along its central portion aud less thau one thousand feet elevation in the western or valley region. The line of the Central Pacific Railroad crosses the eastern boundary, and traverses the southern portion of the county-f r many miles.’ T& then enters Placer county, following close to the seuthern boundary of Neva~ . da county till near its westera limit. The Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad coinects with the Central Pacific at Colfax and exten:ls thence north tu the ceutral portion of the county, passing through Chicago terininating at “Nevada City—twenty-two miles from the Central Pacitic Overlind The central portions contain most of the rich gold mines, including quartz, hydraulic and placer mines together with, the vpper por tion of the Horticultural belt, while the western or foothill region consists exclusive ly of agricultural and grazing lands. The horticulcural aod agricultural section of the sounty comprixes about 250,000 acres~ ot land, a large per centage of:which is adapied to eultivation. The topograpy of the county is such as to give variety tu the pro ducts. We grow successfully in Nevada vounty: Oranges, lemons, citrons, figss, olives, apricots, plums, st-awberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberrie~, hazel nuts, black walnuts, chestnuts, almonds, and “every kind of vegetable grown. ‘Nevada City is the county seat of Nevada eounty. There are five daily, one tri-weekly and three weekly newspapers published in the county.
