MEN THAT DO THINGS =
CANNOT ESCAPE CRITICISM
ROM the President, governing the land to the newspaper writer, scribbling his daily column, everybody
is a target for the flings of people who could do his
_ work so much better than he if they had the chance.
Does Mr. Roosevelt name a cabinet? Hundreds of newspapers are quick to tell him that he has selected the wrong
men. Does the greatest soprano in the world sing a new
song? Critics whose ignorance of music is monumental rush
into print and show that she was off the key, that her notes
are false, and that she misconceives thé spiritual meaning f
a case in‘court? The bailiff, the clerk and all the law students in the jroo perceive a dozen deficiencies in his work
and feel confident that they could have beaten him had they
been on the other side. Does a brilliant and experienced
physician prescribe a certain course of treatment for a patient? Every old woman in the neighborhood, deeming herself a born nurse, declares an opinion that the doctor is an
ignoramus, and woe to the physiciat if the patient dies, for
the old women, both male fand female, will accuse him, practically, of murder. Does the proprietor of a successful newspaper-follow-an-editorial policy that-builds up his cirealation
Pro Bono Publico, Veritas and other venerable friends and
subscribers, entirely ignorant of the practical conditions of
the newspaper business, shower him with criticism and advice and urge him to publish a paper that might exactly suit
them but would suit nobody else. uh
Critics enjoy the precious privilege of not having to do
anything positive. They are the pit which sits at ease and
picks out the mistakes of the stage. They are the stay-athomes who cried “On to Richmond!” and denounced the
aud “its generals in active service for not putting
down the Rebellion in a week. They are the. gentry who
rasp the administration for its handling of the Philippines,
but quit suggesting a better way of doing the work.
The world is full of these teady-made critics who never
voice of Jove and atone of finality that would have graced
the oracular bull, They are thick as flies and they buzz and
them as one of the vexations imposed on human nature for
its sins. It matters not how hard a man strives or how well
he does his work. He will not satisfy the amiable critics
who will sit in judgment on him. His only consolation is
that if his work is meritorious carping will not kill it.
But the world belongs to the man that does things—the
Critics may sit on their hauuches, sneering
and reviling, but to the man that does things belongs all the
honor and glory. The man that does things is the great
hero or the great villain in the play. The critics are merely
the chorus, whose? names are never printed on the bills.
Since even the Creator does not escape criticism from
persous who think they could have ordained the universe
better than He has done it, mortal’ man may not hope to do
his own work in his own way without Tunning foul of that
large class of idle busybodies whose function in the social
economy is to find fault with people that do things, point
out their mistakes and give them advice free.
