It would be cheaper to do this than to stand the expense of the suit—in case it is lost—whicb amounts to nearly $250 a day. I met Mr. Shoecraft, the honored representative of this county. He asked me if I had seen the Bloomfield mining exhibit, and directed me to it. It is a magnificent display of intelligence and tisefulness: Oar respected Assessor, William H. Martin, has a fine exhibit of some of his mining interests in this county. The Golden Jubilee Fair is a benefit to the whole United States government in my estimation. Cornélius Sullivan, an old resident of Allison Ranch and a miner by. occupation, died at midnight of pneumonia, He. was aged about 68 years and was commonly known as “Curly” Sullivan. Set Wht wan teniatey cotter eens Sailor on board a slave vessel which was being hotly pursued by a Govern: ment revenue cutter, witnessed the brutal and inhuman murdér of nine hundred slaves in a few hours to destroy the evidence of the nefarious business in which it was engaged. The Slaves were taken out of the hold, weighted and sunk in the ocean off the ‘Florida coast. No pleadings for mercy touched the hearts of the slave pirates —men, women and children to the last one met their untimely end. ~ The Vaive Blew Out. Last night at nine . ° o'clock a sound as of the bursting of a. pipe-line and the rushing of water was heard about town. It appeared to come from the direction of the Mayflower or Marchie. mine. The sound was occasioned by the safety valve of the boiler.at the Phawnix mine being blown out. It blew out twice—at nine and eleven o'clock. ‘Started the Steam Pump. The steam pump at the Phonix mine has ‘been started for. the purpose of getting the water out of the old workings. The mine is now-clear to a point just below the 800 foot level, and the old water-power pump has not yet been reached. A Mysterious Disappearance, Co.vmeavs, Ind., Feb. 11—The mysterious disappearance of George Cook, a wealther bachelor from San Francisco who came here to visit his cousin, W. Newsome, leads to the belief that he has been murdered. He had $600 on his person when he left. his cousin's house two weeks ago to go toa neighbors’ and he has not been seen since. He was worth $250,000, including forty seres of land near San Francisco, aud was 70 years old. The sentence was the same as that received by Plyler, the principal in the affair. Motions for an arrest of judgment and for 8 new trial were denied. A ten days’ stay of execution was granted.
