It was a regular battlefield of broken and mangled wheels and castings, splintered timbers and disinembered pipes, The ruin was caused by an accident which occurred between one aud two o’elock Monday morning, The casuality, though resulting Fin po loss of life, was a serious one from the standpoint of damage caused, loss of money entailed and cessation of labor necessitated. At the time the-accident occurred Bert O’Hara, the engineer, was on duty, and things were going along as usual. He was lowering a cage, when, without warning, a tooth of.the cogwheel known as the volved struck a tooth in thé cogweel called the sparwheel and knocked a tooth off of it. This was followed by the ripping—ot nearly all the teetiv from the pinion, The “cable which is attached to the cage and goes down the shaft winds round the reel cn the “side of the spurwheel and when the teeth came off the pinion the spurwheel was released from all control and the cage plunged down the shaft like lightning, the cable whisking after it like the tail of a snake. When the cable had all played out it brought up taut with a jerk that yanked the reel and heavy spurwheel from their places and smashed everything to pieces. When the crash came the electric light’ Wires and the big steam pipe over head were broken, “putting the lights out and filling the room going on, but he could hear things going to pieces and he expected to be killed évery minute, An iron plate about a foot long, big enough to knock a man’s brains out, fell between his feet, but he remained unThe arms of the reel and spurwheel, which weighed several -tons were An arm struck the tly wheel of the other engine with terrific force, and knocked a big fragment out of it. A piece of flying iron went up through the ceiling and made a hole several feet in Another piece struck a 14x14 upright timber in the gallows frame and splintered it into kindling, and still another knocked down a heavy iron brace, The wooden box about the engineer’s stand was also broken. ‘The cage and cable, went to the bottom of the shaft into the sump, 1100 feet below the surface. What injury they did to the shaft is unknown as the latter cannot be investigated until the machinery is repaired. Thirty-fwo men were working in the drifts on the 600, 700 and 800 levels, There-was‘no one in the shaft. The men were taken out through the Belcher, They will be laid off till the machinery can be mended, The shock to the engineer’s systein laid him up today, : 2-<@e o—————_— Officers Installed.
