‘Trustees that she will’ not sell for that

Following ie a copy of the letter received
by the Board in regard to the matter:

Hon, T, H, Carr, Clerk. of Board’ of
‘Trustees, Nevada City, Cal.—Dear Sir?"In
‘reply to your favor of recent date conta ining the offer of the Board of Trustees of the
sum of $15,000 to Mrs. EK, C, Huntington
for the Nevada City Water Works, Iam instructed by Mrs. Huntington to say that she

A dispatch from Washington, D, C., that
appeared in this morning’s Union, contains
etatements that are very damaging to
Grove L. Johnson, member of Congress
from this district. He is represented as
speaking against the bill for an appropria~
tion to:build restraining works to protect
the Sacramento and Feather rivers from
debris caused by hydraulic mining, The
matter came up for hearing before the House
Committee on Riv¥érs and Harbors. Hon.
Tirey L, Ford spoke in favor of the bill, and
made a good impression on the committee.
Congressman Johnson, in a short speech,
is credited with saying that the hydraulic
miners were responsible for the whole. condition of the rivers; that hydraulic mining
was illegal in California prior to the passage
of the Caminetti Act, and that a hydraulic
miner.wae considered an outlaw and was
carrying on an ‘unlawful and nefarious busiAfter reading the above report Congressman Johnson’s friends, who were surprised
to hear that he had gone back on the
miners, began to cogitate upon his sincerity .
when he promised the miners that he would
do all he could to advance their interests.
The following dispatch was sent from
Grass Valley last night:Grass Vattuy, Feb. 14th. _
Grove L, Jonnson, Representative,
Washington, D. C.
Remember the pledges you made and I
made in your behalf to the hydraulic miners
to secure your nomination and election.
Joun F, KipprEx.
In reply to the above, the following dispatch was received this norning:
Wasuineron, D, C.,. Feb, 15th.
Hon. Joun F. Kipper—Telegram received. Ihave kept, am’ keeping and will
continue to keep every pledge I made during campaign. Have been working in perfect accord with Senator Ford since his
arrival in ‘Washington. Introduced. bills
for him when others refused. ea
Grove L, JoHNson.
Mr. Johnson's reply is so directly opposite to the statements made im the press
dispatches that his friends are puzzled to
know whether he really did make use of the
words he is quoted as saying, and if not
From his
message it would appear that he has been
misrepresented, We await further developments.

Electric Bitters.
Electric Bitters is a medicine suited for
any season, but perhaps more generally
needed, when thé langnish exhausted feeling
prevails, when the liver is torpid and _sluggish and the need of a tonic and alterative

often averted long and perhaps fatal bilious
fevers. No medicine will act more surely

Two of the bright lights of spiritualism,
Dr. Henrie Beauseant and Kate Fox, whose
mysterious seances have won for them much
fame, will appear at the Nevada Theater,
Sunday night, February 16th, in a spiritual
seance, Dr. Beauseant and Kate Fox in
many respects are mysterious people. The
peculiar gifts they possess have ‘made them
favorites with sovereigns and admitted them
to familiarity with great scientists, and
have also caused them to be songht by. the
inquiring, the curious and the speculative
minds of two continents. In their seances
materialism of spirit forms and hands take
shape, Music will be made, tables will float,
flowers will materialize and many other
strange things will occur entirely new to
the public, and these mediums produce all
their manifestations in bright light. It will
