Ae —— NEVADA City DAILY Fr ———— [Se “TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION Byflet, °* $6 Per Year . By Cerrier, : : Delivered to anyloart of the city. Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City FEBRUARY 14, 1904 12 1-2c Per Week MONDAY cise svsesnecee gence tents a eagelenesonsees SERIOUS FAILURE OF DUTY HILE the American citizen, as a rule, is doing every: thing possible to promote the honor and glory of his country, and while even the Missouri mule is anxiously and willingly waitifig a call to arms—or kicks—on his part, either in Colombian, Santo Domingan or Russian fields, there is a serious failure of dnty on the part of the American hen. Time was, and not so long ago, even so recently as 1902, when the exports of eggs amounted to the ~ handsome total value of $655,792, after an ample supply had been laid aside by the prudent ,housewife and the cold stor— age companies for home consumption, while the imports amounted to the infinitesimally inconsiderable total of $28— and they were game eggs—from Europe. It is otherwise today, and it was otherwise last year, when the American hen began to take on reserve and a declination of duty. American agents are now scouring Europe aud Canada in search for eggs, the imports rising from $28 in 1902 to more than $180,000 in 1903, and the egg searchers are not yet through with their work. There is no reason for the refusal to do duty on the part of the Americanhen. ‘There has been no diminution of affection toward her, and she has been as carefully reared and tended as of yore. Her roosts are as high as ever, as a measure of safety from predatory excur— sions in the dark of the moon. If there has been anything the matter with her daily diet of worms and corn she has made no moan, but merely, and with a persistence wholly unworthy of her sex, has refused to return the kindness extended her and the care exercised on her behalf. The hen may learn, but when it is all too late, that science has stepped into the breach and produced a quality of egg that will relegate the original article to the lumber room, where repose the stage coach and other ancient relics WMIOLE MILSIDE 1 LOOSE A Big Foree of Men at Work on the Great Landslide Near Cape Horn. CoLFAx, February 15th.—The big landslide on the steep hill just above Wirt station house and a short distance this side of Cape Horn, on the line of the Southern Pacific Railroad, is the most serious. proposition that the road superintendent of this division has faced for some time. Yesterday a great mass of earth and rock, 300 feet width, came down the mountain side. but fortunately did not carry the railroad track away, as the slide stopped just a few feet away. This morning 150 men were put to work blasting and clearing out the tons of earth and rock which threaten the destruction of the roadbed. A steam shovel is being used to facilitate the work. The whole side of the hill above the track where the slide occurred will be scooped out, in order to prevent future trouble from such sources in this locality. Uutil the danger can be removed engineers of all trains rounding Cape Horn have received orders not to stop at Wirt and to run slowly, as the slightest jar might start the whole mass and crush sometrain. About sixteen years ago a big slide occurred not far from this point and caught .a passing train. Oni of the engines was swept off the track, the other imbedded in a great bank of loose earth, and several of the crew in charge of the train were killed. Having Revenge. Ripened Judgment. William J. The society proposes to submit to the Legislature a bill providing that marriage licenses shall be issued only to persons presenting the certificate of a reputable physician, certifying that the applicant has been fully instructed in the duties pertaining to the marrisge relation. Meddling bills of this sort are not likely to pass, and, if passed, they become dead letters, and, therefore, cause little annoyance to the public. Young people, especially young Women, entering matrimony, are, however, in too many cases ignorant of many things of which they ought to be informed. But the mother and not the family physician should instruct a young woman on all these matters. Many mothers are foolishly reticent in talking to their daughters. They bring the girls up in complete and wondering ignorance of some of the main facts of life. A false modesty and a failure to distinguish the difference between innocence and ignorance conspire to prevent these mothers from doing their duty. The result is often very harmful. Probably Bryan thinks he will be in better position to umpire the game if he can set upthe pins. If he is given his way, it will be made all the easier for the Republicans, But to Bryan this is a small matter compared to again securing an endorsement from the Democratic party. The colossal egotism he displays is only equalled by the nerve he exhibits in asserting it. Unreliable Prophel. McAdie, the weather forecaster for the San Francisco station, bas proven himself an unreliable prophet right along for this section of the State, and people here generally expect the opposite condition of weather to prevail] from what he predicts. For instance, he made the prediction that Sunday would be cloudy and cooler and that there would be a heavy frost Monday morniog. On the contrary, it rained IT’S IMPOSSIBLE. To Disprove Facts. It Is Decidedly Easy to Verify Nevada City Opinion. Nothing by way of an introduction could be added io the experience and opinions given below, which coald increase their value, Nevada City people can be safeiy left to draw their own conclusions based on such convincing proof as this citizen offers. What is there lacking in evidence like this to satisfy a dyed-in-the wool doubting Thomas? H. CG.
