nent cnt TERENCE THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT Brown & Calkins, Publishers, FRIDAY FEB. 16, 1894, The Ditch Is Is Blocked. The report that the the South Yuba Company’s ditch had broken in Bear Valley isa mistake. We are informed by the compa~ ny’s representatives in this. city that the ditch is blocked with snow and ice for several miles this side of the big tunnel. Ten men have been shoveling and’ flooding out the obstructions, but the weather has been against them. Yesterday a blinding.snow storm prevailed all day in that locality, and’ gseatly hindered the men. Should the weather remain fair a couple of days it -is thought the blockade can be raised and the water sent through tlie ditch to this city. At present the water for the town comes by the Rock creek ditch, which is independent of the Snow Mauathia ditch. at For the Gate Receipts. — The glove contest between Nichols and Beckman is tobe for the-net gate receipts. The winner receives sixty per cent and the loser forty per-cent.._Each man is to pay his trainer and; other individual expenses. The match is to be to a finish, otherwise neither of the contestants will receive any money. : Superior Court. — The following business was transacted in the Superior Court today, Hon. As an illustration of how .we exchange our products with our less favored brethren at the East, three cars loaded with pork arrived. at Sacramento Thursday afternoon from the other side of the Rockies, meeting in the foothills eight carloads of beans on their way to Boston. Boston and California seem to understand the true spirit of reciprocity. -_——_______— --+ #@e + -— For Four Years. a It will surprise most people” to feara that, like county officers, Justices-ofthe-Peace and ~~ Constables elected this fall aro to serve four} years. : Fine Rock. Bank Commissioners W. H. Knight and J. B. Fuller, who are at present in this city, have inspected the books and accounts of the Citizens Bank and find that institution to be in a flourishing condition. They say its affairs are in better shape than any other bank they have visited, and they regard. it as one of the most solid. concerns in the State. Don’t Worry Yourself And don’t worry the baby; avoid both unpleasant conditions by giving the child pure, digestible food. Don’t use solid preparation. Nature intended infants should be raised on milk. ‘The Gail Borden Eagle Brand Condensed Milk is the safest solution of the problem. 2 A Sick Prisoner. The following petition was received from the officers of the Fire Department of this city: : To the Hon. Paaed of City Trustees— Gentlemen: Acting for the Board: of Deleex NO CITRUS BELTS. os ’ Sensible Remarks About Northern and Southern Citrus Belts. The Colusa Sun says in referring. to -the statement of the Los Angeles Herald that the citrus exhikit of Northern California is . misleading: “The oranges that took the premium for quality were grown in the Courthouse yard in Colusa, and there are hundreds of thousands of acres of such land in the Sacramento Valley. There happened to be some oranges planted areund Oroville, and people said it was a citrus belt; there were some up in Placer, and Placer had a citrus belt; . there were some in Nevada county, and people said it was a citrus belt. It isall nonsense. Oranges and lemons will grow to perfection on any land in the Sacramento Valley with plenty of water. ey ‘‘As every frost comes with a northwest wind, there are sheltered nooks where they will nut be as likely to be i injured by cold as_ in other places; lit right out in the middle of the Sacramento Valley is as good a place for oranges as Riverside or Los Angeles Counties. “We donot say this to disparage the southern citrus belt. We rejoice in the pros-} perity of any spot in our State, but there is no use in keeping up the fiction ofa citrns belt, north or south.” Bucklen’s Arnica Salve. Men’s Overéoats at Miller's: gates of the Fire Department of Nevada] City, after careful consideration of the needs of the city in regard to.its protection from fires, we respectiully recommend that new hydrants are needed at the following places in this city: One near the Catholic Chureh, on a Coyote: ttreet, : One on Main street, at K. Casper’s house.. -One on Main’ Street, at Chas. house. ee One on Pine street, near Mrs. Schemer’ 8 house, One on East Broad street, at Nivens’ lot; One on Lost Hill, near Mrs.McCauley’s place. One on Piety Hill, at the junction of Gethsemane and Zion streets. --One-on-Pine-street; at or near the junetion of Clark street. One on Prospect Hill, near A. J. Tiffany's house. Many of these hydrants can not be located at the places designated unless the water mains are extended. At many fires the Department has had to work under many and great difficulties by reason of the distance of the hydrants, and the long line of hose necessary to reach the fires. As your Board are aware, the city has been at great expense in buying large quantities of hose in order to be able to reach the fires. . They now have all their hose carta can} =. == well carry and more hose can not be well used, Long lines of hose greatly decrease the pressure, and, with the small mains, leaves the Department in a bad shape to control the fires. We earnestly recommend your Hon. ‘Board to insist on having new mains extended the short distances required to have’ them connected with the hydrants we ask to have put in. This will greatly add to the protection the Fire Department can extend to the property of many parts of the city. Respect.ully & G. J. Scumipt, : Chief Engineer. . Wa. Browniya, “Foreman of No, 1,
