<. “4 THE TRANSCRIPT. BROWN & CALKINS. Published every evening except Sundays and Lega! Holidays by FRIDAY....-.0+55Feb. 16, RAILROAD RUMBLINGS.Southern Pacific Plans to Reduce the Dis. tance to the East. oats The fact stares us in the face, says} the Marysville Democrat, that there is . a much more rapid settlement of parts . of Southern California and much greater increase of population south of Tehachipi than there is in the central . eni northern part’ of the State. And this increase has caused new railway . lines to be constructed to accommo: . nate the settlers. Wherever the people . will go the railroad: will follow, even . into the frozen regions of Alaska. If . there were hundreds of home-seekers . and tourists coming from the East to . this part of the State there would be . greater demand for railway lines. And . if this were true of Northern California . the road through Beckwith Pass that . now bas terminus at Clairville, several . miles west of Beckwith, would have . been completed to Oroville or Marys. ville long ,before now. The last new, route for a road is from Reno to Keeler . in Inyo county and via Mojave to the) southern part of the State. . In fact the . Southern Pacific finds it necessary to. construct a cutoff, a nearer route) from Omaha to Los Angeles than vis . S:cramento and Lathrop. This is im-. portant to successful competition with . other roads, especially the Santa Fe . Com pany. . It is claimed that the proposed route . would avoid the climb over the Sierra . Nevada Mountains on the Central Pacific, which is both costly and time. consuming. By filling in the gap be. tween Mojave and Keeler, and utilizing . the Virginia and Truckee and the Car. son and Colorado roads, the Southern Pacific will consumate a cut off that . will practically put the company on an . equality with the Union Pacific’s proposed line into Los Angeles. The request fora right of way between Mojave and Keeler, indicates that any con-. that owing to the necessary improvetemplated combination with the Rio. was defeated in the House today. Grande Western has been abandoned. Surveys are being made west of Ogden for the purpose of straightening aud shortening the Central Pacific between Elko and Ogden as part, the plan to reduce the time and distance between Los Angeles and Ogden, in anticipation of one or two lines to the . East from Los Angeles by way of Salt Lake. — . Grotto Saloon Burglarized. When Andrew McNally, day bartender at the Grotto saloon of Main street, came on duty early this morning, he made the startling discovery that the establishment had been burglarized during the night. His story is that she offered him $10,000 if he would testify to the wedding, and that he consented to do so iatending to expose her when the proper time arrived.
