f° They Wanted Blood.
While a fair was being held recently
in a small town in Belgium the owner
of a menagerie announced that one of
the villagers, who wan known to pos
sess great courage, would enter that
evening a cage containing two lions
and would remain there fifteen minutes.
pne determined to witness the novel
. sight, and as a result there were several hundred persons in front of the
lions’ cage when the performance be
gan.
Ata signal from the owner the courageous villager entered the cage and
ever, took ‘not the: sligh
him, and after the fifteen
expired he left-the cage.
a storm of hisses greeted him,
next moment such an uproar arose
that the owner s*nmoned the police
and the entertainment came to an end,
The fact was the people expected
that the lions would attack the villager and they were disappointed be
cause no blood had been shed.
“Yet it is exceedingly probable,” says
a French writer, “that if one of the
lions had escaped from the cage this
bloodthirsty crowd would have been
terrified almost to death.” j
: cere of Puppies.
Puppies after weaning will keep
strong and healthy and will grow fast
if fed only on fresh buttermilk and
corn bread, with soup instead of the
buttermilk twice’a week, till they are
five or six months old. Do not feed
them sweet milk. Keep the puppies
where they can get plenty of exercise.
Do not crowd them. Arrange their kennels so that they can go in and out of
their sleeping quarters. If fed in the
same yessels, some dogs get more than
". their fair share of food and lose their
manners also. Fasten a number of
chains where they eat at such distances that no one can reach the other;
then feed in individual pans. Give little medicine and plenty of exercise,
and you will then have strong, healthy
dogs. An hour’s run every day in the
year. in-the fields. and woods, weather
permitting, is essential to good heaith.

Took Her Literally,
Elizabeth Cady Stanton was once
giving ‘a piece of advice to.a roomful
of young men in a little village on the
subject of matrimony. “When you
marry,” she said, “choose a woman
} with a spine and a sound set of teeth.”
“Good gracious, Mrs. Stanton,” remarked one of her listeners in alarm,
“do they ever come without spines?”
Bad Spelling,
One of the causes to which the prevalence of bad spelling among the rising
generation {s attributed is the fact that
the modern Roman method of pronouncing Latin gives no direct indicatien of the pronunciation of the English derivatives and so no cue to their
spelling, as the English sound of Latin
words did when it was used.
Overheard In the Garden of Eden,
“You are a nasty, mean, horrid old
thing, so there!’ exclaimed Eve.
“I suppose next you will threaten to
go home to mamma,” taunted Adam.
Then, realizing the bitterness of nature’s handicap, Eve burst into tears.-:Philadelphia Record.
The Wife,
“Suppose I were an absolutely per»
fect woman,” she remarked sharply.
“Do you know what you'd do then?”
“No,” answered her husband.
“What?”
“You'd growl because you had nothing to growl about.”
Very Willing.
“You asked her father for her hand?’
“Yes.”
“And he refused you?”
“No, he didn’t. He said I could have
. both. of them.’’—Cleveland Plain DealA Color Clar ,
“Madam,” said the maid, “the dyer
has brought your silk dress back and
gays it is impossible to dye it to match
your hair, as you requested.”
“Well,” said the lady, “ask him what
he would charge to dye my hair to
match the silk. The colors clash as
they are now.”
Possession No Proof.
A name on the handle of an umbrella is not sufficient identification at a

A Fish Story. AAs
“Talk about fish and things of the
sea!” said he who claimed to be a seufaring man. “’T was in the year—well,
it was a good while ago and we were
floating somewhere around—well, one
of the oceans. One day we were heading sou’ by sou’ west, latitude—I forget
exactly which—when a ripple in the
water suggested the presence of a
shark. You can always tell a shark
by its ripple. He’s got one of his own,
We never landed a good specimen, and
when he showed lils head I could well
tell he was a ten footer. I always was
quick and precise. A knife in me
mouth, a jump, and I landed beadforemost between the shark’s jaws. Quick
as a flash I turned around. With me
knife I cut holes through his sides for
my legs and arms to pass through and
swam back to the ship. Well, he was
a fine morsel, that fish was, and we
lived on him for weeks. Is it true?
Well”—and he displayed a splinter from
the kendle of the knife. — Harper’s
