The tax fe assailed on the false premise that it is an unequal and anjust tax. In fact, it is neither, for it is more aniform than any other tax scheme in our system. It is probable also that it is more uniformly collected than any other tax. It amounts to this—it is an annual contribution by all citizens below a fixed age and above their majority, for the support of the most generally approved of all our {ostitutions, namely, the common schools. It is, we confess, difficult to understand the sentiment that prompts good citizens in the opposition of the tax. It is aot a burdensome thing. It is paid not only by American taxpayers but Chinese and Japanese residents also, who SEVERE COLD IN . WasHINeTOoN, Feb. 16—The President today sent to the Senate the nomination of George B. Rev. J. *. To abolish the tax means to add largely to the burdens of texpayers and relieve the aliens entirely. It has been pointed out that the poll tax gave the common schools in the last six years $2,326,526 81, or more than two anda quarter million dollars. This enormous sum, necessary for the maintenance of the school fund, every dollar of which, less costs of collection, goes to that fund, must be added to the sum of other taxation if the poll tax is ab slished. Under the poll tax system a large amount is collected from people who pay “no personal or real property tax, and thus if relieved of the poll tax will contribute nothing whatever to the maintenance of the Government which shelters them, guarantees them their liberties and the free education of themselves and their children, By accurate calculation it will be found that if che poll tax is abolished, the revenue it now insures to the State will have to be securad by increased taxation upon property, and that Will mean, on the basis of present needs and estimates, the adding of nearly four cents to ‘the annusl tex rate of the State. To send the question of the abolishment of the tax to the people to vote upon is an évasion and will not relieve the Legislature of responsibility in the matter. It should not heed the sentimental pleading in favor of abolishment. through Tennessee, Nebraska, Missouri, blowing and the temperature four degrees above zero. The Sunday Oall of yesterday contained a half page picture of the mem' bers of the Commercial Men’s Minstrels, who appeared here on February 7th. The likeness is 'rueto life, and several of the faces were easily recognized by friends in this city, becoming apparent that the shelf room will soon be inadequate; in fact many books are now piled on top of the bookcases and additional room is a_necessity. In order to remedy this the board voted to ask the Supervisors at their next session to place additional shelvinginthe room. The library was establisbed in 1892. Regular meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month. It is open to all residente of the county and is well patronized by practicing attorneys. The future conFequences of the gratification of that appetite, on the contrary, are represented by the tiny, faint, feeble waves which flow over from some other brain center, excited long ago, when the ¢connection of this particular cause with its natural effect was first experienced. In such an unequal contest between powerful vibrations shot swift and straight along the tingling nerves from the seat of immediate peripheral commotion and the meager, measured flow of faded impressions whose initial velocity and force were long since spent what wonder that the remote effect seems dim, vague and wenreal, and that the immediate gratification of the insistent, clamorous appetite or passion wins the day!—Willlam De Witt Hyde in Atlantic. A woman entered the cabin. She stood and gazed at the rose a moment.
