This is especially true of the Denver &

Doings of Our Neighbors in the Rastern
Part of the County.
The following interesting batch of
items we cull from the Republican of
Saturday:
The weather played another funny
-freak Thursday night. The meroury
nearly dropped out of the thermometer. We had had extremely cold
weather before and no colder weather
was expected, but Friday morning was
the coldest of the season. The mercury stood as low as 28 degrees below
zero here, while down at Prosser Oreek
it is reported to have reached 87 degrees below zero and 80 at Boos. At
9 e’clock in the morning the thermometer on Front street, this place, stood
10 degrees below zero, though the sun
wasshining. It caused endless trouble
with water pipes. It froze them up
after people had arisen from their
slumbers and built fires and turned on
the water. Friday evening a bitter
northeaster was blowing, and: any one
unfortunate enough to have been exposed to its pungent blasts would have
been irczen in a short time.
Davies Brothers will erect a sawmill
at this’ end of Donner Lake just as
soon as the weather conditions will
permit. They have secured about
twenty-five million feet of timber in
the vicinity of the lake and will log it
to the upper end of the lake and then
tow down to this end. They have the
sawmill and all the frame work of
their other mill which was taken down
on Alder Creek and brought to town
last Fall. When started the work of
putting up the mill will be speedily
rushed to completion.
Division Superintendent Laws passed through here going west Thursday.
He went direct to Delta, in the northern part of the State, where a freight
train was. delayed a considerable length
of time by the caving in of a tunnel.
The engine escaped damage, but three
or four cars were.badly wrecked.
The jury’s verdict in the Kenney
murder trial was received in “Truckee
the same evening ofthe day on which
it was delivered, The findings came
‘. somewhat a8 & surprise, though most
all who knew Kenney. and were acquainted with the circumstances were
of the opinion that he was justified.
This was especially true of those with
however, who thought he would be adjudged guilty of manslaughter. Those
who were in attendance at the trial
speak in the highest praise of the able
. defense made by I. O. Lindley, attorney for the defendant,
