BASILY BNJUGH.
A Wiity Pupil Surprises a Mischievous
Teacher.
Here is a Grasss Valley Sundayschool story :
They were studying in the catechism
about the wonderful greatness and
power of God. “Can God do everythiug ?” asked the teacher. It was
generally admitted that he could.
Then the teacher rather mischievously
propounded a sticker, perhaps as a
test of fuith. “Could God make two
and two equal to five?” he asked. The
query rather startled the little girls in
the class, and their faces took on a
worried, puzzled expression. They
had never thought of such a thiag as
that, and it looked as if their faith
was wavering. The teacher
with:a rather amused smile ov his face.
Then up shot a httle hand. “Well,”
asked the teacher, “what do you
think about it ?”-“Yes, sir, He can,”
was the prompt and certain response.
Now it. wasthe teacher’s turn to louk
surprised. “Well, how can God make
.two'and two equal five?” “By adding
one,” was the triumphant answer, and
-the mischievous teacher couldn't dispute it.
Fouty 200 of the 484 tin-plate mills
tin Wales are idle, and although wages
thave been reduced about 15 per cent.,
ymanufacturers are barelyable to hold
‘their own. This is in marked contrast
with the tin-plate mills of the United
States, which are all busy and new
ones being constructed. The fact is
of itself a sufficient comment upon the
the insistence of Democrats during the
discussion of the McKinley tariff bill;
that tin-plate could not’ be manufactured in the Unitee States even with the
highest protection.

A Bad Break.
A living had been given to a gentleman who, up tothat date, had held a chaplaincy ata gaol. On his first Sunday in
