Alfred Wilkie, vocalist and promoter

Some weeks ago he was given a fare\ well concert and started off for somewhere or other, but hé' is back in Oakland again, and thereby -hangs a tale.
Mr. Wilkie left Oakland with the
Boston Ideals, a trio of performers,
that expected to travel all over the
coast giving concerts ia churches and
halls. ‘They charged high-class prices
ail along the line fora mediocre entertainment. There were but three peoplein the company, Mr. Wilkie, one
young lady who played the piano’ very
skillfully and another young lady who
gave recitations and was exceedingly
commonplace. They visited Nevada
City and Grass Valley among other
places, striking a frosty wave in both
towns. So it was wherever they went, : :

_ The Chinese New Year was ushered
in with the usual pomp and ceremony
this “year, and the racket with ‘fire
crackers aud bombshells was kept up
to the delight of the small boys, until
the death of Ah Mow, which put a dampar on the proceedings for a few days.
The demand for Sierra Valley -cattle
appears to be on the increase. Steady
shipments of beef cattle have been
made during the winter, until it has
been difticult fo meet the demand for

Dolley this week, which they were nuable to fill. \
The Oriental mine ciosed ‘doen last
week to wait for spring. A number of
men celebrated the event Saturday and

was “a hot time in the old town,” and

badly knocked out, and a number are
laid up for repairs.
The Alaska mine at Pike City, so
long idle, is to start up under new
management. A superintendent and
foreman will soon arrive from Arizona

This news brings joy to the hearts of
the people of that vicinity, which has
been practically dead for some time.
A recent letter from E.Schoch, formerly a barber in Sierra City, and whe is
