Some weeks ago he was given a fare\ well concert and started off for somewhere or other, but hé' is back in Oakland again, and thereby -hangs a tale. Mr. Wilkie left Oakland with the Boston Ideals, a trio of performers, that expected to travel all over the coast giving concerts ia churches and halls. ‘They charged high-class prices ail along the line fora mediocre entertainment. There were but three peoplein the company, Mr. Wilkie, one young lady who played the piano’ very skillfully and another young lady who gave recitations and was exceedingly commonplace. They visited Nevada City and Grass Valley among other places, striking a frosty wave in both towns. So it was wherever they went, : : simply because they charged fifty and . did Dot appear at the bar of the house seventy-five cents for what was noth-. today to answer the charge of contempt, ing more than a good two-bit show. Wilkie rode home, and from the tone of a story in the Fresno Republican, the two ladies were! To Elect confronted with the alternative of remining in Fresno or walking out. It is claimed by Wilkie that the business Minager of the company, Philip Ray, Was a “frost” and that ak a result of his Miismanagement the entire compauy eaffered. The Republican of a few days ago had the following to say with regard to Mr. Wilkie and the Ideals: “Mr. Alfred Wilkie, who sang here recently with the Boston Ideals, writes the Republican claiming that the misand Young. fortunes of the company are due to thé escapades and bad management to A. One of the old-time boys got badly knocked out, and a number are laid up for repairs. The Alaska mine at Pike City, so long idle, is to start up under new management. A superintendent and foreman will soon arrive from Arizona to take charge, when the mine will be drained: by means of a siphon. .As soon as. the mine is thus drained it will be worked through the old shaft.
