The readers of this newspaper can better understand the attitude of'the Cuban people toward Americans by the -tidings from Senor Capote, vice: president of Cuba, who says abet his: countrymen entertain for the people of the United States the most friendly feeling, and that the Americans who visit the republic are fairly Monized. SENOR CAPOTE. (Vice President of the Provisional Republie of Cuba.) there are only about one-third of the inhabitants who can read. Senor Capote is a Cuban by birth, and has always made his home in Havana. He received his education in that city, and pradticed law there for a number of years. He joined the insurgents in 1895, and last November was elected vice president of the rewho was elecied. president. Senor Capote has visited this country, and it was while on his way here last May that he came near being captured by Spanish cavalry, who chased him from the suburbs of Cuba’s capital, in the mountains of Puerto Principe province. ‘he vice president escaped, however, and safely made the dangerous trip from Cuba to the island of Jamaica inan open boat. There he took passage for America on ‘2& steamer which was wrecked in a storm just off the Cuban coast, near =e : Arriving at this point, the party was sure of being captured, but the commander of the Spanish force at Cape Maysi lighthouse mistook Capote and his associates for foreigners instead of Cuban patriots, and all escaped before he learned differently.
