Entered at the Postoffice at Nevada City as econd-class matter. TRLEPHOWR No, 4. FRIDAY . (iia ey LOL TEOR: Tue Congressional committees of both the great parties have been organized and the battle of 1898 will 8 iortly be begun. The lines betwecn sound money and that from a depretiated metal will be as distinctly drawn asin 1896. The fact that every asser‘tion of the advocates of free silver has been disproven by the events of prosperity promised by the Republi-. oans through the adoption of protection. and sound money has already made its appearance, should strengthen greutly the prospects of that party in tae coming campaign. There are, however, no’less than 75 close Congres:ional districts in the United Statea, and apon these the Democrats, Po;uJists, and Silverites will turn their united forces in an attempt to elect a ty silver man, no matter to which one oS the three organizations he may belong, so long as he can be relied upon to vote in the interest of the silvermine owners. Secrerary Witson is poring his work looking to the establishment of a great sigar-beet industry in this country with unremitting vigilance. The new stock of beet seed has been received at the Department of Agriculture and will be distributed to those sections of the country desiring to make further tasts this year to determine whether they can profitably raise beets for the sigar making. The Secretary believes that the sugar-beet is to be one of the best crops which this. country has developed for many years. Not only, says he, will our farmers be able to u'timately produce all the sugar consumed in the country, but the refuse proiuct, after the extraction of the s.igar, makes excellent feed for stock, and his belief is that the industry will tend to greatly stimulate dairying in the United States. Will Be a Deep Mine. Telegraph: uyperintendent Fred Zeitler, while in town today, was di:c.issing many mining matters and he}’ has enquired very extensively into th. many different mining projects going on both in the Grass Valley and Nevada City mining districts. Mr. Zeitler is enthusiastic over the prospects for the future and says that during all the time he has spent here} in mining he his never known the star of prosperity to shine as bright as it does now. Superintendent Zeitler is interested ix many mining ventures in the county * and will stay with them. He tells us that the Champion is looking better than it ever has looked and they are keeping the shaft. going down all the the Champion will be the deepest mine in the county.
