Though his public career was brief, he is worthy to be counted in the galaxy that includes Thomas Corwin, W. S. Grossbeck, George H. Pendleton, Benjamin Wade, Joshua R. Giddings, Allen G. Thurman, John Sherman, Edwin M. Stanton, Alphonso Taft and James A. Garfield. No man, not even Stephen A. Douglas, rose to such a pitch of power in politics and to such an influential place in the Senate in so brief a period as Senator Hanna. At the time of his death, no single member of his party swayed such a masterful influence and commanded more unquestioning obedience among his followers. ; His death is likely to create a disturbance in Ohio politics. Two powerful Republican factions are contending for supremacy in the Buckeye State, one led by Senator Foraker and the other composed of the adherents of Senator Hanna. Hanna always tried to avoid a clash, but one may be precipitated now. The Legislature and Governor are Hannaite, but in politics no one can tell what will happen when the leader of a faction dies. Some conception of the true character of Senator Hanna may be obtained from the following narration by a personal friend who has done business with the Senator for many years, and which was culled from an Ohio newspaper a few months ago, the Senator being in excellent health at that ‘ time: Sone time ago a movement was on foot to consolidate all the furnaces in the Middle West, and this gentleman was appointed to wait on Senator Hanna and explain the matter to him and obtain his consent to become a party to the transaction. He visited the Senator and told his story. Mr. Hanna thought the plan a feasible one, and that the accomplishment of the purpose would result in the making of much money, but he declined to go into it. His friend was surprised, and the Senator explained. He said: “My friend, look about you. Do you see all of these old gray-headed men at the desks?” There was quite a number of old men busily toiling away. “Yes,” said the friend, “I see them.” “Well,” replied the Senator, “so long as I and my family control these furnaces these men will have employment. Many of them have been with me for more than twenty-five years. They have helped inake me, have helped to give me all I have. If I go into this deal the control passes from me, and I could. have no assurance that these old men would be permitted to keep their positions, And I want to tell you that I would rather die a pauper than to see such a thing come to pass.” Mr. Hanna did not go into the deal. He was not further urged by his friend. He is not in any trust combination today, notwithstanding what the opposition party press may say about the matter, and the old men are toiling at their desks secure in-the protection which shadows them from a great and tender and grateful heart. Such is a glimpse into the Secret soul of the man who has won the affection and the confidence of the American people. >> 44644464468 CHEAPNESS HEAPNESS is adelusion. The countries in which it is the most striking feature are the most degraded on ‘God’s footstool. The basis of cheapness is the degradation of the manual worker. In the lands in which the toiler puts a just estimate on the value of his labor there is almost comparative dearness. _ Dearness and cheapness are meaningless terms when interpreted by priceslists. True cheapness can only be measured satisfactorily by ascertaining the standard of living of peoples. If they have plenty to eat, and plenty to wear, and may gratify their esthetic desires, people are living cheaply, no matter what the nominal cost of things may be.—SchenecMINING STOOKS, : Ophir 363525: 4 95 (Sierra Nevada. tady (N. If it reaches this part of the country it will have little terror with a large number of our people who are jast recovering from their ‘‘measly” experience. It would probably be welcomed asa change. Measles have prevailed in this part of the country all winter, to a greater or less extent, and is getting to be an old chestnut.
