Grant is . 4,4; me tedin d pires has a very important. upon the material prreintorsar political welfare of a great. commonwealth. Perately and justly by the people of this State. » . Placing _ At the outset, ‘the quest toa arisee:. % Do the personal qualifications of U. at Grant, Jr, of themselves cons valid basis and suggestion of -didacy, or is his candidacy by the distinguished name he bears, or . iP "the honored historic lineage to which he the nation could no, it did for General “thay justly lay claim? What, then, are Mr. Grant’s qnalifi. ations for the office of Senator? Has successive terms and his remains rehis education especially qualified him for a career in the highest patliamentary body inthe world? Are his abili-. which will enable him to step from the, floor into the august place of a Senator without. experience?. What has been his career as a party leader? Of what, great political principles has he been the proponent? What speech has he delivered upon national isstes which has pointed the way to a solution of great national problems?’ What aid has he -rendered to the party at whose hands he asks political perferment in achieving-and maintaining supremacy in the nation? Inseeking answers to these questions, we are animated by no spirit of prejudice toward the aspirant. But these questions must be answered, and satis. , factorily to this people, or Mr. Grant . has no possible chance of election. To . take these questions seriatim, answers. are not far to seek. U. 3. Grant has bad noexperience in . ' any legislative body. ~He is therefore a novice in statesmanship. There is nothing in the éducational qualifications of U. S. Grant which would afford 4 guarantee of a successful . , career in the greatest legislative foram of the world. Mr. Grant has manifested on no fleld of intellectual activity, commanding abilities of any order. -<He has deserved no recognition af @ leader to whom it owas either aL tade‘or feality. Ho bas not -eaergizad ths national conscience concerniug any great principle of civil liberty, or instracted or enlightened the nation on any great question of public policy. He has delivered no speech at any time or place which would stamp him asan intellectual leader, philospher, politition or statesman. He has rendered no distinguished service to the Republican party aud has not contributed appreciably to its success in the State or in .the nation. The questions we. have propounded being irrefutably answered in the nega. tive, it follows by the conclusion of in-. exorable logic that U. 8. Grant, Jr., di-. wested of his name and. tbe patriotic association with which it. will be forever connected, and divested of the historic lineage which belongs to him, would possess no personal qualifica“¢ions constituting a valid claim to great office of Senator or ‘suggesting his. name and serenely sad that office. The name of U. S. Grant is associated with the strongest patrioticsentiments the human mind can know. From Bel-. ment to Appomattox U. 8. Grent was the one peerless military hero of the great historic period of this nation. A proud and happy nation acknowledges with the deepest gratitude the service he rendered his country as a military captain. But the attributes of character which distinguished him, ended with -his military career. If the great qualities of General Ulysses 8. Grant have descended to his son, they are in the ine of military genius and patriotic Aevotion, for the administrations of e ‘President Grant were conspicuous fail. mres. It was infinitely greater to be: Grant than to be President, and the Presidency added nothing, but detracted much from the foundations upon which the fame of the great General of the Civil War rests. The claim of U.S. Grant, Jr. to be United States Senator from California therefore has no broader foundation urerer ems ane So . the Banat ‘wanted to’ marry a nobleman.”—Chica. . # trades itesif:: What wouta W. 8. It made him President two pose in a mausoleum “fit for the tomb of: a deadGod.” That ‘tomb is the Mecca of American patriotism. The attempt to pay tribute to the memory of this ‘dead hero by elevating ‘his son to a-position for which hie does ‘not ‘possess. the necessary . personal qualifications would be infinitely belittling to Aimerican institutions. Living, it might have flattered the paternal! vanity “of General Grant; but dead, it is scant honor to his memory.
