In commenting upon the Mining Fair with which the Jubilee festivities are to be continued for awhile, the Oakland Tribune says: It is a praiseworises td fulfill the utmost -expectations of those who conceived it. “Only a perproper idga-of how well and thoroughly the plans have been carried out, for there is no questioning the fact that’ the fair worthily commemorates the her point of view.—Town Topics. great &poch in whose honor it is given. The prevailing -Kiondyke craze has, of course, tinged everything with more or less'of the AJaskan hues, but as, af-. ter all, the Yukon treasures are a matter of speculation they cannot compare with the actual facts that are to be seen on every side as regards California. The huge cube of the exact size of the*billion or more dollars worth of gold that has been taken out of our mines since Marshall found the first speck of the yellow metal fifty years ago conveys a lesson that fills the mind with wonder when its exact meaning is comprehended. Then, too, the fact is brought out that California is still adding about $18,000,000 a year to the wealth of the world and that the indications are that the period of our quartz. mining is but in its infancy Several of the big mines of California are turning out over $100,000 a month, the Utica and Rawhide containing veins that seem to be almost endless. Many an hour ean be profitably passed at the fair by those interested in the subject: The methods of niining from Alpha to Omega are shown in}, practical shape, the ingenuity of the exhibitors having extended to a veritable “drift” into which visitors are taken and there in the darkened chambers are the miners drilling away just as they do in the mines proper. All kinds and varieties of ore attract the attention of the mineralogist and the past is revived by pictorial representations of early scenes and photographs of.those who were famous in California thirty or forty yearsago. The scene is instructive throughont, and one on which the Californian can gaze-with pride. It shows “how thoroughly we have earned our title of “The Golden State,” and what is more, it proves that instead of being a declining industry here, it is, on the contrary, booming. such is the case, the best of which is the actual results, for statistics show that our production of gold is advancing at the rate of over a million a year. The fair will do particular good at this time for it will call the attention of the country not only to what we have done but to what we are doing. nn Dr. De Wirr Tatmace has just married a third wife.
