The Case is Considered

{n Form.
Another case of diphtheria was reported in this city today. Yesterday
George Walling, who is atout twenty
years old, complained of a sore throat,
and this forenoon it developed into
diphtheria, The case is not of a
malignant type, however, and it is
thought. that there is no danger of
the disease spreading. Health Officer
Hugh Marchie quarantined the Walling residence early in the day.
At this time it is well for our sitizens to use every possible means to
guard against the disease becoming
epidemic. The city_now has one of
the very latest improved fumigating
machines. It is so constructed that
areom can be thoroughly fumigated
through the key-hole of the door.
The apparatus is highly recommended by those who are familiar
with its virtues, and who are competent to pass judgment in matters of
this kind. Mr. Marchie has proven
himself to bea very painstaking officer, and ‘he desires that everyone
should aid -him in the performance of
his duties. He speaks very highly
concerning the Oliver family in this
respect, In their late bereavememt
they did everything within their power
to aid him carrying out his precautionary measures,

Snow From a Clear Sky.
The most wonderful snowstorms of
all that may be seen every winter in
the Adirondacks are those that prevail
when the sky is cloudless. Of these
there are several varieties. Every week
or two we would see what looked like
a fog form about the distant hills and
then. come drifting across the creek
valley. -Doubtless it was a real snow
elnden’’étoud that had been drifting
along until it struck our level (1,300
feet above the sea) in-the Adirondacks,
when the conditions became favorable
for the release of its feathery burden.
We saw these clouds fill the air with
flakes that were driven along almost
horizontally by a strong gale, although
the tops of’ our old hemlocks and
spruces rose into the clear air and unobstructed sunlight above the highest
level of the snow producing air stratum. We even saw the snow so thick
in the air about us that the trunks of
trees six feet above the earth were
not visible, although the treetops could
be seén, and the sun shone down
through the shallow storm with
strength enough to cast distinct shadows.
We have stood on a quiet, sunlit hilltop and looked down into a valley less
tuan 100 feet below us, where a snowstorm was raging with violence and
the temperature was frigid. — Scribner’s.
Saved the Lamp.
An amusing scene occurred at a New
York dock the other night. A Scotch
engineer, who wished to go ashore, ordered a boy to show him the way with
i lantern. As be was crossing the narrow plank that served as a gangway
the boy slipped and fell into the water.
The instinct of the true Scot instantly showed itself. “Hold on to the lamp,
boy,” the engineer shouted, leaning
over toward the water. “Do you hear?
If it’s lost, there's a dollar gone from
your wages.”
After some time the boy was rescued
balf drowned, but clinging to the lamp.
As some compensation
for his trouble
he was forgiven for losing the bottom
of it.
; A Lottery.
It happened in the county clerk’s office.
“J want a lottery ticket,” he said.
“Certainly,” replied the polite clerk.
He knew a thing or two, did the clerk.

disturb him. “We don’t call ’em lottery
tickets, but of. course they are much

Dickens’ Finances.
Dickens did not begin-to save money
. until he was nearly forty, and throughout life he suffered acutely and incessantly from pecuniary worries and
anxieties. He was never short of ready
money after his great crisis of 1844,
but he was never easy about the future
until after hig enormously profitable
second American trip in the winter of
1867-68.
Secrets of Comfort.
Though sometimes small evils, like
invisible insects, inflict pain and a single hair may stop a vast machine, yet
the chief secret of comfort lies in not
suffering trifies to vex one and in prudently cultivating an undergrowth of
small pleasures, since very few great
ones, alas, are let on long leases.

The “W” In Writers’ Names.
Beginning with William Shakespeare,
we remember instantly Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, Washington Irving, William
Makepeace Thackeray, Henry W.
Longfellow, John G. Whittier, William
Cullen Bryant, Ralph Waldo Emerson,
Oliver Wendell Holmes ‘and Walt
Whitman. Others whose names occur
almost simultaneously are William
Cowper, Isaac Watts, Henry Ward

Phillips, George William Curtis, Richard Grant White, Julia Ward Howe,
George W. Cable, William D. Howells, Charles Dudley Warner and
Richard Watson Gilder. To these are
easily added Sir Walter Blackstone,
John Wesley, Edmund Waller; Nathanfe) P. Willis, Walter Savage Landor,
Will Carleton, James Whitcomb Riley,

Country Innis In England.
A’ noted traveler says he has sampled a large number of hotels in his
time—even in Greece—but for barefaced dishonesty in the making of
bille the bluff British landlord takes
first place. “After charging twice
what his food and rooms are worth he
tacks on a further charge for service,
another for lights, another for bath,
another for fire. In short, my experience of-country inns in England—and
I can speak with some authority—is
that I pay as much a day at a shabby
little country inn of England, where
the food is poor and ill cooked, the attendance inferior and the beds poor, as
I would at a good hotel in such towns
as Springfield; Mass., or the very best
in Switzerland or Germany. Indeed, it
must have struck the average, Amertean that the incomparable Baedeker
hardly ever finds it possible to recommend an English hotel.”

His Appeal. ;
Little Georgie was taken by his aunt
to see the newcomer, aged one day.
He was duly and profoundly impressed with the specimen and asked where
the little brother came from. “God sent
it,” answered the aunt reverently.
The answer made a deep impression
on little Georgie, for that afternoon he
was seen out in the backyard gazing
up into the deep blue sky and spreading his diminutive. apron expectantly
as he said, “Dear God, please throw
me one down too.”—Troy Times.
Hardening Steel.
Small steel articles that are too soft
may be hardened with sealing wax.
The method is to have ready a large
stick of sealing wax and then after
heating the article to a cherry red
thrust it into the wax for a minute,
withdrawing it and sticking it in again,
repeating the operation until the steel
is cold and will not enter the wax.

Spy Magqruder’s
The Anti-Debris A3sociation held
another meeting at Sacramento. and
Spy Geo. H. Magruder reported that
he made an examination of different
territory from that covered by the
other spies, and also covered a certain
portion of the territory that they examined. Among ether mines’ visited
by him were those at Badger Hill, Columbia Hill; Grizzly Hill, Shady Oreek
and Scotch Flat. He said that the
water in Deer Creek the day he visited
the mines in that vicinity was very
muddy, and he was of the opinion that
there was considerable mining going
on above that point. He says he visited the old' Kate Hayes restraining
dam at French Corral, and found that
about one-half of the material depos-.
ited behind it has recently. been washed into the South Yuba River, and was
practically doing as mueh damage as
ifthe material had originally been
washed into the stream. The parties
stracted sluices and undercurrents in
the ravines below the old dam and
large heads of water are run over the
old dam, carrying the material through
the sluices from which it. is dumped
into the river below. Several years
ago an injunction was obtained against
the Kate Hayes, and an appeal from
the judgment is now pending in the
Supreme Cevurt, and while the Company itself has ceased mining by ,the
hydraulic process, other parties are
washing the material lodged behind
the dam that was partially restrained
by theirdam are now dumping into
the river. At Badger Hill the dam
had been raised two feet since his last
visit. At Oolumbia Hill the mine was
closed down, but the men were engaged
in outting brash and logs preparatory
to raising the dam.
