* Speaking about General Pole-Ca; Tew, says a writer in a Londou ‘peri. odical, reminds me of the time when
‘he was on Lord (then Sir Frederick)
. Roberts’ staff.ad military secretary.
. He wore colonel’s badges and looked
‘like a junior subaltern. It was in
Quetta in 1886 ata public ball thai
I saw him leaning against a wall
with his arms ‘folded and looking his

who looked old enough to be Carew’s father. Thumping a heavy
hand on: his ‘senior’ officer’s shouider, he growled out in a voice of
thunder:
“Here, you, with the face of a baby and the rank of a field marshal,
ome and have a drink.”
~ Pole-Garew’s face was a study, but
atthe roar of laughter which followed from all who heard there was
no help for it, and he went. . He was
certainly one of: the youngest looking-colonels Lever saw.
Why a Rat’s: Teeth Grow Continually.
Certain énimals have teeth which
grow during all their tives. The rat
and .the equirrel are -examples of
this.‘ “Our own teeth are developed
from pulps which are absorbed and
disappear after the teeth are growti,’
but in a rat’s tooth the.pulp is perpetual and is. contiially secreting
material by which the incisor gains
length. Therefore the animal is
obliged to gnaw all the time to keep
the tooth ground down to the proper length. It is commordy imagined
that the rat keeps gnawing from
pure cussedness, but such is not the
case 4
Sometimes it happens that the
beast’s upper and lower incisors do
not meet.properly, so. that it is unable to gnaw, and its teeth keep
Dalai around in a spiral. Cases
ve been known where a rat’s tooth
grew in this manner through ‘its
skull, so as‘to pierce the brain and
kill the unfortunate. The biggest
teeth I know of are those of the
mastodon, which we have in the
shape of-fossils. One advantage
about teeth is that they are harder
than almost anything else in nature .
and w'll last longer, so that they . _':@-BEATTY, Gen Pass. and Tisket Agt.
