The State Mineralogist has started out a trustworthy man on the road to personally inspect mining and oil properties that are being advertised abroad as great dividend winners which have no reputation to speak of at home and so are objects of ~suspicion. The official searcher for truth left San Francisco a few days since for Southern California with data in his pockets and. definite instructions from the State Mineralogist to guide him. In speaking of this important matter Mr. Aubury says: “There are fake concerns in this State that are making all sorts of pretenses in the East and in Europe to ensnare the unwary. I have reccived letters from bankers in Europe and elsewhere in which were enclosed circulars issued from various points in California, in which the pretense of being able to earn enormous aruual percentages on investments annually is set forth. One banker in Paris has written to me that he is satisfied that a concern to which his attention has been attracted by one of his clients is paying dividends from its capital and not from its earnings. After looking the matter over I am convinced that he is about right in his supposition. I will not mention the concern yet, but I will soon have all the facts about the property that is made the basis of the circular in question. This is a mining proposition, but there are oil propositions that are proceeding on the same line. Oil properties and mines will be investigated wherever there is any reasonable question concerning the representations that they are making for. the purpose of selling stock. I take it that the duty of the State Mineralogist requires him. to do all that can be done to protect the legitimate mining interests of the State. are doing business on the square. way in which the State Mineralogist can act. pany is found to be operating under false pretenses I will inform the Postmaster-General of the United States and that -will lead to having the objectionable circulars excluded from The investigators who are sent out will be competent and thoroughly reliable men, who will report from personal observation just what the production of any mining The misleading circulars that have been the mails. or oil’ company is. youngest daughter of Rev. and Mrs, . ‘this vicinity. raised at this city and by kind acte and cheering disposition has endeared herself to all her associates. finishing her education in the local public-school Miss Sims took her departare for the southern part of the State, where slie entered an elocutionary echool and eince returning here has ever been found ready and willing to take part in all programs for benefits, etc. The public library fund which has a good. start and bids well to become a reality, is partly due to the efforts of the young lady as she was the starter of and manager of the the entertainment which was recently given for that purpose and proved to be a grand social and financial! success. : Mr, Kirkbride, who is a young man. rived here last evening. of sterling qualities and pleasant disposition, is the only son of Rev.
