Mr. Erskine is going in-. to business for himself at Grass Valley. James Ferguson in a letter dated at Skaguay on the 7th instant and written to William McDougald of Truckee says that he has been doing well up there. When he arrived in Juneau he was broke. Now he says. he has made money enough to buy him an outfit besides considerable other mney, that he has spent. The Ganadian police are turning back. everyone who attempts to cross the passes with less than 1000. pounds of provisions. They collect 25 per cent. duty on everything that goes over. Besides. the duty the cost of transportation over as far as Lake Bennett is from 85 to 40 cents per pound. He ex"pects to start for the mines the last of March of first of April. He said that he was on White Pass within three “miles of the Summit, on the Skaguay river. -Four or five men had _ been brought back frozen to death. Others get faint hearted and turn back. Some of those who turn back have good outfits and sell them for nearly an opportunity to get such an outfit at «@ bargain. There are about 4000 dead horses that were killed on the trail last Spring. ‘They are nearly thick enough to walk on. He thinks it will be about as bad this Spring. He saw Billy Dolan on the trail. Dolan had got over about half way with his outfit. Clarence Widener and James Goggins, he says, are in Dyea, but he has not seen them. There was a fine opportunity to make money this winter speculating on lots in Skaguay. A new sporting club has been ‘formed in this city, for the purpose of promoting boxing, boxing matches and kindred athletic sports. The following are the officers which were elected Jast evening: F. I. Lammon, President; Mteorge Levee, Vice President; A. D. “Mason, Secretary; John T. Lammon, ‘Treasurer; F. I. Lammong A. D. ‘Mason, Frank Golden, Fred W. Bost and George Dunster, directors. ReguJar monthly meetings: will be held on the firft Thursday of each month. The first event. will be a boxing match between Jack McCausian of Browns Valley and Joe Catten of San Francisco which will take place at the theater next Saturday evening, when a large attendance is 6xpected. No rowdyism will beallowed, but clean, square sport is guaranteed. There appears to be no reason why Nevada City should not support and enjoy clever boxing matches and athletic sports as well as Grass Valley, whose club gives regular contests. A RIGH “TBLLOW. Is the iaitrl Guard puard Trying to Outshine ‘the Sextsational ouraals? The Sacramento Bee, which keops its weather eye wide open and sizes up most things about right, says : The National Guard of California is also becoming yellow. . Instructions bave been issued for an inspection drill Thursday night, the purpose of which is to see whether the guardsmen are on earth and ready for business. Without desiring to make the National Guard nervous, the Bee would suggest that the cannon in Armory Hall be brought out, and their measure, taken for am-. munition. At present there is ssid to b2 no ammunition extant that will fit them. The cannon have, however, for many years rendered. a public service 4m line with that of the National Guard itself. They have contributed to the impressiveness of our Fourth of July celebrations, and helped to make the Summer girls of Santa.Oruz think how nice it must be to be a real soldier. ar other Reno Reno Marriage. The Result of Some me Matches at i ain. four different teams were exciting in the extreme. The same officials presided as on Tuesday and the contestants were: John Dingle and J. W. Jof-, ford, J. J. Coan and T. L. Ooffey, Pat and John Kitto and Lewis Page. The There were two prizes, the first $220 and the second $100, and in addition two gold medals of the value of $50 were given to the first and second teams. Owing to the hardness of the granite and the badly tempered steel: in the drills several were broken by each team, and this tended to keep the records down several inches. The teams finished as follows: John and Pat Feeney, 26 14-26 inches; Kitto and Page 26 9-16 inches; Coan and Coffey, 22 4-16 inches, and Dingle and Jefford, 21 14-16 inches. When the announcements were made by the judges Kitto and Page chailenged the Feeney brothers to drill today for $1000, and the match may probably be arranged. The wrestling matches at night were prefaced by an able address on “General Mining,” delivered by Judge J. M. Fulweiler of Placer county. In the wrestling the heavy-weights came first. Fred Trebilcox, 215 pounds, easily threw Fred Webster, 187 pounds, in three-quarters.of a minute. The lightweight contest between Charles Hoskins, 160 pounds, and Thomas Whalen, 170 pounds, was a beautiful exhibition, It took fifty-five minutes to decide this match, which was won by Whalen in the twenty-fifth round.
