A new sporting club has been ‘formed in this city, for the purpose of promoting boxing, boxing matches and
kindred athletic sports. The following are the officers which were elected

Mteorge Levee, Vice President; A. D.
“Mason, Secretary; John T. Lammon,
‘Treasurer; F. I. Lammong A. D.
‘Mason, Frank Golden, Fred W. Bost
and George Dunster, directors. ReguJar monthly meetings: will be held on
the firft Thursday of each month.
The first event. will be a boxing
match between Jack McCausian of
Browns Valley and Joe Catten of San
Francisco which will take place at the
theater next Saturday evening, when a
large attendance is 6xpected. No rowdyism will beallowed, but clean, square

Grass Valley, whose club gives regular

The Sacramento Bee, which keops its

most things about right, says :
The National Guard of California is
also becoming yellow. . Instructions
bave been issued for an inspection drill
Thursday night, the purpose of which
is to see whether the guardsmen are on
earth and ready for business. Without
desiring to make the National Guard
nervous, the Bee would suggest that
the cannon in Armory Hall be brought
out, and their measure, taken for am-.
munition. At present there is ssid to
b2 no ammunition extant that will fit
them. The cannon have, however, for

four different teams were exciting in

and John Kitto and Lewis Page. The
There were two prizes, the first $220
and the second $100, and in addition
two gold medals of the value of $50
were given to the first and second
teams. Owing to the hardness of the
granite and the badly tempered steel:
in the drills several were broken by
each team, and this tended to keep the
records down several inches.
The teams finished as follows: John
and Pat Feeney, 26 14-26 inches; Kitto
and Page 26 9-16 inches; Coan and Coffey, 22 4-16 inches, and Dingle and Jefford, 21 14-16 inches. When the announcements were made by the judges
Kitto and Page chailenged the Feeney
brothers to drill today for $1000, and
the match may probably be arranged.
The wrestling matches at night were
prefaced by an able address on “General Mining,” delivered by Judge J. M.
Fulweiler of Placer county. In the
wrestling the heavy-weights came first.
Fred Trebilcox, 215 pounds, easily
threw Fred Webster, 187 pounds, in
three-quarters.of a minute. The lightweight contest between Charles Hoskins, 160 pounds, and Thomas Whalen,
170 pounds, was a beautiful exhibition,
It took fifty-five minutes to decide this
match, which was won by Whalen in
the twenty-fifth round.
