CALIFORNIA — : plished every eveni Sootace aunt t Legal Holi ays by BROWN & CALKINS. L. §. CALKINS. . except N.P. BROWN. Entered at the Postoffice at Nevada City as second-class matter. * TRLEPHONE NO. 4. THURSDAY ..... FEB. 24, 1808. A POPULIST ON PUSION, . Whether the effort of the Silver Trust to again bring about « fasion between the Populists and the Democrats is going to be successfal seems to be very much in doubt. Hon. LC. Bateman, the Maine member of. the Populist National Committee, is out in a vigorous denunciation of the proposition, which he says, is a scheme of Sen“ator Butler, the Chairman of the Populist National committee, and Senator Jones, the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, intended to serve personal ends and likely to result in the destruction of the Populist party.]cret of financial success, Almost evIn an interview published in the Washington Star he says: “No political party in this country was ever before disgraced as ours has been by its leaders. They have fused with everything insight that would bring them an office. Allen and Edgerton in Nebraska went over to the Democrats completely. This they had a right todoand we find no fault. Chairman Butler, however, has proven himself to be the Benedict Arnold of the eentary. Every move he has made since he was made chairman of the national committee has been made, to advance his own personal interests. His treachery has been of the most unblushing kind. He wants to be reelected to the United States Senate and knows he cannot be without the aid of the Democrats in North Carolina. For that reason he has become the abject lickspittle of Bryan and Senator Jones. . > “The recent meeting cf the reorganization committee in St. Louis was unanimous for independent action and ao early national convention for‘ our party. No morefusionfor them. This feeling is re-echoed by the rank and file all over the country. The committee did not deem it. wise to call a national convention at that time, but . left the date to be fixed by the rank and file of the party. A referendum vote is now being taken to see whether the convention shall be held. July 4th of this year, May, 1899, or Fébruary, 1900. ‘There is little doubt that July 4 of this year will be fixed upon. Who will be nominated? you ask. Let me tell you a story. The Democrats have been necessary it is to be patriotic and rise above party. Perhaps you have noticed that every time we have risen above the party a Democrat has ovcupied the driver’s seat. “Well, we have become so thoroughly imbued: with the idea of rising above partys that we are going to do it once more. You will observe that even Democratic teaching has not been entirely loston us. We shall nominate Wharton Barker, editor of the Philadelphia American: The Demoorate "and their assistants, like Butler and Allen, would be delighted to ‘have the midle-of-the-road men pominate an old-time agitator like Tom Watson or Ignatius Donnelly. We all love and honor Tom Watson. He is one of God’s noblemen—true as steel, and a thorough Populist. But we realize should we nominate him the fight will come between the two old parties, as ugual. . . The fusionists would then go over ina} body to the Democrats. Oh, no, the Butler-Jones faction will not see us ‘ok our feet into the trap, however skillfully leid. With Wharton Baker for our candidate we shall have.risen so far above party that even the Democratic schemers, will come to a. realizing sense that we are apt students. Yon are going tosee one of the biggest aphesvals inthis coantey the comin Sate Begins Saturday, January 22d, or AND WILL CONTINUE THJRTY DAYS. “Bryanisa'back number, and the abmalninke ‘bim, ‘They certainly will not do sounless he becomes the abject tool of Wall street. Then they would nominat2 him simply asa decoy duck. eraladvice we always have for young coming for the selection of county officials throughout the state and it may be wéll for young men to look district.attorney sometimes helps the help even hiny if he cannot afterward inake as muchas he gets in office. This last is the seerybody can make some money, but denial. * SETS Raa rore REE ENED THE people of San Andreas want a bell at their cemetery to toll at fanerals. It seems, says the Downieville . a bigstep backward. The funeral bell like the curfew is a relic of the ages when superstition’ held sway. There are, as it is, too many’ ridiculous trappings of woe to a latter-day funeral without adding the doleful toues of a funeral bell, to further harrow up and distress the already overburdened feelings of the mourners. If funerals were made less costly and less spectacPalk about office-holding, ‘Femarks @ the Colusa Sun, reminds us of the gen-. : men—steer clear of it.
