Saweuesineele aisle os sees FEBRUARY 24, 1904 STEP _ THAT PROPOSED RAILROAD OR a number of years past there has been considerable talk dnring the winter season of plans made and projects outlined for the building of a railroad through the foothill section of Nevada county, connecting the two principal cities of this section with some convenient point on the Feather or Yuba river where transportation can be had direct by water to San Francisco, Although people generally are a little wary about accepting rumors and statements about new railroad enterprises (having had considerable experience in the past with these schemes ‘on paper’’) yet they veritably believe that a railroad through the rich farming section of this and adjoining coutities will be built in the near future, as it will not only be the means of opening up of a large section of the best agricultural land in the State for development and profitable culture, but will afford quick and convenient transportation facilities for the many settlers already living in that section and the large number who will ultimately locate in these parts. _ At present a railroad through Nevada and Placer counties, via Vernon, Lincoln, Spenceville and Grass Valley, is the most feasible route talked of, and according to the latest ‘information construction work on the proposed line is to commence within the next sixty days. This announcement will no doubt be of great interest to our people locally, as it has been planned to ultimately extend the road to this city A press dispatch from Lincoln gives the latest intelligence on this subject. C.L. Wilson, the promoter of the new broad~guage railroad enterprise and who is now in that town, stated that he confidently expected the construction of the road to begin within two months, and that the entire length of the road would be fully built and equipped in less than a year. The contract price has been agreed on, and the contractor is now only waiting to be assured that capitalists will take the bonds off his hands as soon as the work is finished and trains running over the line. The road is to be a broad gauge steam railroad, starting from Vernon on the Sacramento river, running thence by Feather River to Nicolaus, and from there direct to Lincoln, where a round house and repair shops will be built. Thence it will go across Bear River at McCourtney’s Crossing and continue to Spenceville, from which point it is to follow the main county road to Grass Valley. A line of steamers will operate in eonnection with the road from Vernon to San Francisco. ~The putting through of this railroad will be great thing forSpenceville and vicinity, especially. It is proposed to erect a large copper smelter on the road between Lincoln and Bear river, to which the said road will transport the vast quantities of copper ore obtainable at Spenceville and other places in Nevada and Placer counties. It is estimated that 1000 tons of thisore can be furnished per day to such a smelter. As it is now, it costs too much for transportation to other smelters. Three capitalists have been in Lincoln in company with Mr. Wilson, investigating the smelter propoSition for several days, and they are well pleased with the outlook, so it is stated. They propose to prevent the de Struction of vegetation usual in the operation of copper smelters by condensing the fumes and extracting the sulphuric acid therefrom, which will be shipped below to be used in manufacturing giant powder. There is but little doubt but what a railroad along the route contemplated would do more towards developing the southern part of Nevada county than any other plan that could be originated. That Nevada county will make greater strides than ever, in progress and growth, with two railroad lines running through it, cannot be gainsayed. With Russia. The constant patter of the rain upon the shingles keeps the general topic of conversation about town confined to the weather, Everybody is interested in the subject and almanacs, weather prophets and the like are in demand. The prevailing question is, “How long is it going to last?” The old-time resident, who has seen all kinds of weather and all kinds of signs, is really puzzled when the query is propounded to him, He tells of the ‘flood days” and the high price of breadstuffe then, and grins at the anxiety felt as tothe outcome of the remarkably heavy downpour that is swelling high the rivers, creeks and streamlets. Last night the rain came down as though the clerk of the weather had decided to send it all in a bunch. Along towards morning a high wind prevailed and rocked. many buildings on their foundations. At-the O’Donnell place, near the depot, about fifty feet of the fence was blown down. Prophet Hicks describes this as the fifth storm period, which he says covers the time up to the 27th. He states that the disturbing causes at this period are the regular Vulcan equinox, the growing power of Earth’s spring equinox, and the moon at first quarter and north declination. Advices received today from points in the higher Sierras show that 6 heavy fall of snow prevails, and the temperature is gradually declining. At Big tunnel rain was falling this morning, with a register of 40 degrees, and still declining. At Lake Spaulding and Emigrant Gap the suow was piling up fast. The Appeal says: It certainly affords our citizens a lively sense of satisfaction in times of high water to observe our magnificent levee system and the security afforded us thereby. No matter how sensational the reports of rising water all around that reach Marysville, we are content to smile and parade our embankment to view the passing of the floods as they roll along on their way to. the lands below and the ocean. There is no doubt but that our senee of insecurity in years long past has operated to put Maryaville. where she is practically invincible to flood waters. Today with a magnificent embankment of over seven miles in circumference well protected from the action of washing by a fine turf and kept in the best of condition at all times by efficient employes, Marysville is safe in the assurance that never again in the history of the city will the disagreeable and damaging experience of 1875 be repeated. There is nothing truer than the old saying, “In time of peace prepare for war,” in that regard, in so far ag may relate to the danger at any time to be threatened by flood waters, Marysville certainly has taken time by the fore-lock and as the fruit of her caution and indastry sits com. Placently by at times that would be considered critical had any. less precautionary campaign been inaugurated and carried out for our proteotion. During the past five years a dozen cities in California have been flooded at various times, but on each occasion in answer to the query of ‘‘How is Marysville?” we have been able to reply “Never touched us.” NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL AND PERThe local barometers today register SONAL ESTATE. ed about 26, which is below normal dl eee ae aces k PROBATE, : e water in 6 ruba river a (N THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE Marysville was 18% feet high this a greg chiara ee nl apogee morning, which is six iaches above TILLEY, deceased." ” 4 high-water mark, Advices from Sacramento today state that goods in the various store houses along the river front were being moved to places on higher ground. From hearty applause bestowed by the large audience the Play scored an emphatic hit. As its name implies, it deals with ciroumstantiel evidence over a murder in which the hero escapes the gallows at a critfoal moment. The piece is well written and abounds in thrilling but not sensational situations, A strong heart interest. and good comedy vein runs through the -play, the fourth act of which is exceptionally Strong.
