Faith the Basis of Banking.
Faith is, after all, the basis of banking, and if there be no faith there can
be no banking. For that reason it is
possible for those who are skilled in
bookkeeping, but who are dishonest, to
carry on, sometimes for a series of
monthsor even years, dishonest methods
by which even the most expert acconntas long.as this dishonest man can have
access to the books.
The record of embarrassments or failures has, in almost every instance, made
clear, upon examination, that disbonest methods of this kind were carried
on by those who had daily access to the
books, in one case for a period covering
at least 15 years. In that case the disthe Apostles’ Creed: '

. Once more the tale goes round of/the
author who sent a story to'three journals and bad it returned by every'one
without having been read. He knew'it
because he had pasted two of the leaves
‘together. Very likely. We do not think
of reading ¢brough a half or a quarter
of the articies that are sent to us. It
often does not take half a minute to dis2ard what one knows he doesn’t want.
{t is an.old saying that one does not
need to eat a whole joint to learu
whether it is tainted.
It would bea revelation to some of
these writers to see how fast an expe
tienced and conscientious editar can, at
times, go through a big pile af essays,
stories or poems. The title is oftem
snough, and he would say, ‘“We don’t
want an article on that suhject.”” Tho
next article begins with a page or two
of commonplace introduction, and that
is thrown aside in balf a minute’s inspection without turpimg more. than
the next page. The next begins with:a

A YANKEE.
Various Views In Various Places as
to What He Ins.
“T was greatly amused,’’ said a New
Orleana citizen who bas lately made a
visit abroad, ‘‘to notice bow the term
*Yankee’ widens in application as one
gets farther and farther away from th
habitat of the real thing.
‘‘In New York a Yankee is commonly supposed to be a native of Connecticut, Vermont or Massachusetts, and I
have noticed that the name is applied
to mean skinflints rather than to the
people in general. In St, Louis a Yankee
is understood loosely to be any one from
the extreme northeast. Here in New
Orleans the term includes pretty nearly
everybody above Mason and Dixon’s
line—in-sbort, ‘northerner’ and ‘ Yankee’ are more or less synonymous. i
‘‘Now comee the really absurd part .
of it, although quite in line with what
[ have just remarked. While I was in
London I found myself continually referred to as a ‘Yankee’ by natives who
had Jearned I was from. New Orleans.
‘I think you Yankees are very charming people,’ said a big wholesaler who
wanted to be extra pleasant. ‘I know
several from your state.’ I tried to explain at first, bat I soon got tired of
that. I was sure to be greeted by a stare
of antazement. ‘But I thought all
Americans were Yankees, doncherknow,’ would be tbe usual protest.
“Later on I met a very intelligent
hotel keaper at Bern, in Switzerland,
and in the course of conversation be remarked that he had an extremely agreeable countryznab of mine staying at his
house the previous season. ‘As you are
both Yankees,’ he said, ‘you may by .
chance know him.’ ‘Where does he}
live?’ . asked. ‘In Buenos Ayres,’ re.
plied the hotel keeper.’’—New Orleans .

Mr. N. J. Booher of 2710 Dearborn
St., Chicago, Iil., writes: “Catarrh is a
local condition resulting froma neglected cold in the head, whereby the
lining membrane of the nose becomes
inflamed and the poisonous discharge
therefrom passing backward into the
throat reaches the stomach, thus producing catarrh of the stomach. Medieal authorities prescribed for me for
three years for catarrh of the stomach
without cure, but today I am the happiest of men after using only one bex
of Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets. I cannot find appropriate words to express
my good feeling. I have found flesh,
