the benefits which would be derived from having a
Union High School? Or first, how many of them
know what a Union High School is? A Union High
School for us would be a high school formed by the combining of Nevada City school districts with Willow Valley, Gold
Flat, Indian Flat and Selby Flat school districts. It would
be a high school which would prove a source of pride to the
citizens of all these districts. It would give many of our
young men and women the opportunity which they need to
make a place in the world for themselves through the
acquirement of a good education. More teachers could be
employed; more subjects could be taught; better facilities
could be had for teaching. A good high school would give
us a better social standing. Influential people would come
to our city, attracted Ly the wealth of our mines, and the
fact that we appreciated intellectual development and education. An artistic building, large enough for our needs but
not expensive, would add greatly to the appearance of the
town, aside from offering the proper facilities for educating
our youth. The grammar school would be greatly improved
by the aid of funds and room which the high school is now
using, but which rightfully belong to the lower school.
The people of our sister city are determined to have a
good high school. Shall we be behind them? Wit NoT

Let Us Have Peace.
HE BUSINESS INTERESTS of the country are
afraid of the results of Tariff tinkering. If Congress could make changes quietly and without par-. this tabe gets inflamed you have «
ticular debate, all mrfght be well. But the Tariff
question invariably stirs up strife and bitterness because it
affects every interest. Some months ago a considerable number of Republicans were of the opinion that a few changes
could be made in the tariff schedules without particular
harm, but the majority of those Republicans reformed their
views at once and concluded to let well enough alone. Some
months ago there were thousands of men in favor of the
Babcock bill, who are opposed to it now. The business of
the country wants to be let alone. Manufacturers do not desire to be disturbed; wage earners are satisfied; the farmer
and his interests are booming, and farm lands have advanced
twenty-five to fifty per cent. within a year. Thousands of
men are making money, and it has been a long time to wait
for the good times. Nowthey are nervous when changes or
disturbances are proposed. The majority sentiment of the
West is in favor of keeping hands off all phases of the tariff.
They are opposed to its discussion. They believe it is
loaded. And they want time to put. their bank account, in}
black béetore another crash comes. In the Congressional
election. ths year the business interest will demand that
nothing shall be done to disturb the present high water
mark of prosperity. The people know when they have a
good thing. And when part of the ‘people have a good
thing they are satisfied to let others have something of the
same kind. But when part of: the people having a good
thing undertake to destroy the good thing the other fellow
has, all will go down together in wreck and ruin. Let us
