Over in Placer county they have taken hold with a vim in the matter of raising funds for the Miners’ Association, to assist in the prosecution of the work engaged in by that organization, notably that of resisting the issuance of patents to the Railroad Company for lands which may be mineral. The Republican of Auburn thus prefeces an appeal in this direction: The miners, of late years, have had a hard time of, it. They have had the unreasonable valley men to battle with and the ever grabbing railYoad company is now trying to gobble up mineral land as agricultural land. “We might consider the mining industry the backbone of Placer county, for when the miner does well all other industries prosper dn proportion. Now go deepinto your pockets and help our friends that are seeking for the treasure stored in our mountains. Good Words for the Legislature. . Even such a searcher for things criticisa— ble as the Sacramento Sunday News has a good thing to say for the present Legislature. It remarks editorially : We believe that the present Legislature is about as honorable a body of public men as has gathered Here in twenty years. So far ‘as anybody has a right to suppose there has been no yielding to the lobby, as we knew~of nothing that tends to cast suspicion of dishonesty on any of the members. ‘True, there can be no palliation of the extravagant employment «¢ attaches in the Senate and Assembly, but that is aémall matter. It is easy to understand the position of a memb-r,. He is sure to’ haye constituents who pursue him for / place; and it requires rare courage to cast them off. We can easily forgive this weakness if the Legislators will only continue /to keep in the straight narrow path. America =a; Leads the World. The Stockton Maij gives this view of the Anti-Cigarette Bill: If the Anti—Cigarette nails,” as they are gruesomely termed, will probably be stopped. But it may be seriously questioned whether it will prevent the smoking of cigarettes, The bill does not prohibit the sale of cigarette papers nor of tobacco, and it will be an easy matter for those who like a mid smoke to make , their own cigarettes. Even if boys are prevented from using them there is nothing to hinder them from smoking cheap cigars, and it is likely that they will suffer more . physically and mentally from these than they do from cigarette smoking. If parents exercised a closer supervision over their boys and applied the rod when they discover them smoking cigarettes, there would be fewer children and grown persons who are addicted to this wnjurionus habit. We do not believe an Anti-Cigarette law would be effective. He had a very large circle of friends in Nevada, all of whom ‘will regret his death.
