HOOD’S PILLS are denly Terminated. — It wasa sudden and quite unexpected change in the illness of Mrs. John Schmidt, whom it was thought was in a convalescent state early this morning, when about 8:30 o’clock s gradual decline in her condition took place and at the hour of 9:10 she died. Mrs. Schmidt was taken ill abouta week ago with a slight ailment which gradually developed in a severe attack of pneumonia, from which it was thought she was rapidly recovering until the end came. So sudden was the change that it was impossible to summon the members of her family to her bedside. — . The deceased was born in Germany, in 1833, and was 67 years and 5 months of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Schmidt came to this country in early youth, arriving in Ohio in 1804, and shortly after started for California, landing in San’ Franciscu by steamer in 1856. Frank Auwmer, well-known io in this city, wes a passenger on the same vessel. ay Mrs. Schmidt has resided in thie city almost contiguously since her arrival in this State, and leaves to mourn her death four sons—Jobn, Louis, Gustave and Edward, as well as many friends and acquintances. : By the death of Mrs. John Schmidt the community is bereft of one of its most motherly matrons; one who was always ready to assist in the alleviation of the troubles of others, and whose influence for good was ever exerted when required. Improving Telephone System. Work was commenced today to place in position the 1000-foot cable recently brought here under direction of the Sunset Telephone Company, whose main offices in this city are at Vinton’s drug store. The erection of new extra heavy poles to hold the cable has already commenced on Broad street and the work will be rushed ahead as rapidly as possible. When completed, the telephone system will be measurably improved and annoyances caused by! au imperfect system minimized. A number of skilled mechanics, sent here by the company, are carrying forward the work. i Unj ust Charge Dismissed. Walter Finchley was exonerated by Justice Holbrook from the charge recently brought sgainst him by a Chinaman. The evidence proved that an injustice had beep done in preferring the charge; that it was a case of mistaking a bicycle monkéy-wrench for a pistol. Hence the complete exoneration of young Finchley. of Nevada City. Clayton Crew, of Billings, Montana, Mrs. Julia Edwards of Grass Valley, and Mrs. Jennie Williams of North Bloomfield, died at the bome of Mrs. Crew at Billings, Montana, on Sunday evening, January 28th, with consumption. She was 64 years of age. About three months ago she left this city for Montana, with the intention of spending the remainer of her days with Mrs. Crew, her youngest daughter. The Sick People. Mrs. Lewis of Gold Flat is very sick. Grove Deal was very much better today. Miss Bertha Webber is getting along nicely. All of the children of W. B. Davis of Blue Tent are quite sick.
