Kiowas to Marry a

It is said that White Wolf, one of the
most picturesque and intelligent young
chiefs in the Indian Territory, will in
the near future startle his people by inviting Miss Cora Blain, a_ beautiful
white girl, to preside over his wigwam
and share-his honors as the crown
ptince of the rich and once powerful
Kiowas. This wigwam, however, will

edly attached to the gallant young
chief. This affair of the heart had a
romantic beginning, for the two young
people became acquainted with each
other while they were floundering in
the foaming, angry waters of the
Washitau almost upon the brink of a
cataract, in the seething falls and
whirlpools of which death. ruled supreme. :
Miss Blain had started to ford the
swollen stream on horseback. Her father, with other members of his family,
in a two horse wagon was crossing the
river at the same time. There was a
small trading store on the shore that
the Blains were approaching, and several white men and a party of Indians
stood about this building watching the
travelers as they entered the water.
When near the middle of the river,
Miss Blain’s horse stumbled and fell to
his knees, and the young girl slipped
from the saddle. The next instant she
found herself struggling in the rapid
current, o¢casionally disappearing beneath the, waves and swiftly appreaching the terrible falls. It looked as if
there was hardly a chance for her to
escape being torn to pieces in the
whirlpools of the cataract. The Indians and white men ran along the
shore, but they were familiar with the
fury of the waters, and they did nothing more than gesticulate wildly and
ebout senseless exclamations of terror.
White Wolf sprang far out into the
roaring flood, and a few strokes of his
strong arms brought him close to the
sinking girl. He grasped her long hair
when she was within a few feet of the
fasis. If he had been less than a giant
in strength, both would have been
swept to certain death, but he planted
his feet firmly upon the rocks, and by
slipping them slowly along the bottom
and exerting all of his power he was
able to reach smoother water, where he
was met by the rescued girl’s father.
It was a narrow escape. Not one man
in a thousand would have dared to
venture into such a dangerous current.
All who were present declared that
alive again, for it looked as if he were
jumping to certain destruction.
After tbat day the young Indian chief
was ever a welcome visitor at the
house of Mr. Blain. As-time passed it
became evident that the pretty white
girl and the fearless young Indian were
forming an attachment that was
stronger than the ties.of friendship,
but they might never Have contemplated a matrimonial alliance had not

age of the young chief when he found
himself the victim of a fatal web of
circumstantial evidence which brought
him face to face with death was well
calculated to win the lasting devotion
of one whose life he had saved.
It appears that two Indian maidens
who were both violently in love with
White Wolf quarreled, and one killed
the other. The" bloody affair occurred
was absent. He returned at night,
ind, falling upon a pile of robes, he
slept without noticing the body of the
murdered girl. The next morning he
was aroused by the father and a lover
of the dead maiden, who had entered
his wigwam. In a few moments the
village was thrown into the wildest
state of excitement. The body of the
murdered girl, scarred with wounds
and covered with blood, was exposed
in the street, surrounded by wailing
friends and relatives. A knife, red
with blood, which belonged to the unfortunate young Indian was brought
from his wigwam and laid by the side
of the dead body. “
White Wolf was perfectly composed.
He denied all knowledge of the awful
crime, but calmly announced that he
would submit to the judgment of his
people. He was tried and sentenced to
death. The Kiowa court, in obedience
to an ancient custom, gave the condemned man several days to prepare
for death. He was permitted to go
where he pleased without bond or
guard.
“I am a Kiowa brave and the son of
a chief,” said White Wolf, drawing
himself proudly to his full height and
looking into the faces of his accusers
with unflinching eyes. “I will be at the
place of execution at the appointed
time, and you will find that White
Wolf knows how to die.”
This strange character might easily
have escaped, for no one paid the least
attention to his movements. He visited friends and relatives, bidding them
farewell with as much indifference as
if he were going on a journey. At one
time he was actually beyond the reach
of all tribal and territorial laws, and he
might have remained in perfect security.
The tragedy had a strange ending.
White Wolf, arrayed in the costume of
a Kiowa warrior, mounted on a magnificent, gayly caparisoned, jet black
stallion and surrounded by friends and
relatives, all dressed in holiday attire,
galloped: to the place of execution.
After circling about the little grove he
dismounted and coolly announced himself, as he said, “teady for the sacriDrawing aside his cloak, he presented his bare breast to the executioner. A
cross was quickly painted over his
heart, and then a sister and a brother,
holding his hands, led him a short disfance away. He dropped on his knees
and said te the executioner, who stood
‘en steps away, rifie in hand: “Do your
Iuty. Aim well. White Wolf is not
ifraid to die.”
. The executioner raised his rifle to his
shoulder. and the bravest people present closed their eyes. There was a
vild shriek, and those who looked saw
a beautiful Indian girl on ber knees in
front of White Wolf. “He is innocent,”
she said. “I killed Singing Dove. 1]
am bad. Kill me.”
It looked as if the girl’s words and
earnest demeanor convinced every one
present of the truth of her story. The
executicn was postponed, and a thorough investigation saved the life of the
voung chief
