Teams are hauling quartz from the Reward mine to the Nevada County mill ta be crushed, Underground work at this mine was recently suspended, but we learn it is only temporary and that the shaft is: soon to be sunk deeper, The Grant mine at Canada Hill continues to yield fine quartz and the ledge is looking well. Messrs. Veal and Mosby, the lessees, are making the mine pay. Elligon, Tremaine and Chapfell expect to strike tich gravel soon in their claim on Selby Hill. They have been working a long time and indications are that the main channel which they have been running for is near at hand. We hope their expectations will be fully realized; such energy is deserving of a big reward. Hand Nearly Blown Off. Grass Valley Union+-.Wm. Polkinghorn as suffering with a very painful wound in his left hand and from the circumstances surrounding: the-case-he is fortunate tobe pos= sessed of that member even in its shattered eondition. Sunday morning he was out hunting near the Maryland mine. Polkingthorn thought the charge of shot in the barwel of his gun was falling out and turning it upside down he placed his hand -on the-end of the barrel. The trigger was doubtless snapped as the weapon was discharged. Dr, Jones found that. the charge passed through the palm of the left hand, laying the joint t tog me ~ ill be-sent-to the dead letter office. of the middle finger bare but breaking no bones.’ It is quite probable. that Polking-~ horn will have two stiff fingers for life. ~00 Advertised Letters. Millions-of dollars may be saved_and_much suffering averted by giving heed to this warning and preparing for the worst. I very much dislike to predict destructive storms or make sensational forecasts, but duty demands that I give warning of the approach of a season of destructive tornadoes in those parts of the country frequented by these destroyers. Comparatively few people are injured by tornadoes and less damage is caused by them than heavy rains, But the manner to be dreaded. If.we knew just where they’ weita strike, ‘bat Vittle preparation would be DECesHAFY, but-as-we know only about the time to €xpect them, all should prepare for them and be on the lookout during the great storm period of March 7th to April ¥3th. Seven priticipal low barometers will cross the continent during the périod mentioned, and their dates will be given in these bulletins. Those who receive my weather chart for March will find in it details and dates. The dates for the first of these seven severe storm waves are given above. The warm wave will cross the western mountains about March 6th, the great central valleys about the 8th and the Eastern States about the 9th. The cool wave will cross the western mouutains abeut the 9th, the great central valleys about the 11th, and the Eastern States about the 13th.
