is Now in Australia:
H. C. Callahan, who a few years ago’
was Superintendent of the Diamond D
mine in Washington district, is now in
° Australia. The San Francisco News
Letter says:
isso Sacer seine noe Henry
C. Callahan, who left California some
years ago under engagement .with an
Australian mining company, will be
pleased to hear that the property under his management has proved a grand
success. The Western Argus of Kalgoorlie in referring to it in‘a recent issue says: “The Lake View Consols is
opening up so splendidly that from
present appearances it promises to
startle the world. ‘It is only a few
months since it was taken over by the
English company, and already the.
property presents a wonderfully altered appearance. With Mr.’ H. C.
Callahan as mining engineer in charge, . he:
and Mr. Banks as: mine manager, the
View has been opened up in a manner
which will in the near future enable
the thousands of tons of ore in sight
. to be easily and economically extract-.
ed.’ There is one thing that can. be
said of English companies, they are
never backward in bestowing credit
-where it belongs, nor in pushing men
to the front when they are found
worthy of merit. There is no. stinginess either i in the matter of’ aalarice. ”.

Seuissced to the State Prison.
The case of the People vs. Paul Perrault came up before Judge Nilon this
morning. Yesterday the defendant
pleaded guilty to the charge of burglary
which had been preferred against him,
upon the advice of counsel, as he had}
made a confession before his attorneys
were engaged. Today evidence was introduced on behalf of the prosecution
and defense to determine the degree of
the crime, with the: result: ‘that the
court found him guilty of burglary in
the first degree, the crime having been
committed in the night time. I. C.
Lindley, Esq., of counsel for the defense, then made a very able and _ brilliant plea for his client, and Judge Nilon sentenced Perrault to one year in
Folsom prison.

BADLY TREATED;
Mrs. W. C. Bradford Complains to the
* District Attorney of Yuba County.
The .Marysville. Appeal givesthe
following account of trouble that a
lady, who is well here, has® had
at Brown’s Valley.“ She’ was known
as Mrs. Clemmens_when in this city,
and was a dressmaker: :
Mrs Wm. C, Bradford, whose husband
was killed in-a Brown’s’ Valley’ thine
last September, had a‘ tile of woe to
confide toDistrict Attorney McDaniel
yesterday.
She had been rooming at Mrs.
Libby Barlett’s hotel.and eyerything
was made pleasant for ‘her until
Wednesday afternoon. While absent
ed toransack herYroom, and threw her
clothes out into the street. On her return she asked her why she had acted
in such a manner, and: was at once
jumped upon by Emma South, a waitress, Mrs. Bartlett and a miner named
Luce, who beat and bruised her. She
went to Judge Jefferds and asked him
to issue a warrant for the arrest of the
trio, but he réfused to do so, and she
-was compelled to come to town and
solicit aid from the: District: Attorney.
Mr. McDaniel did -not care to have a
warrant issued without first making a’
thorough investigation and consulting
Judge Jefferds.
He informed an Appeal reporter last
evening that he would go to Brown’s
Valley this morning and if he found
that Mrs. Bradford’s story was correct
he would have Libby, her waitress, and
Luce, arrested.
If Mrs. Bradford’s tale is true it is
a. most unprovoked assault. that was
made on her and the guilty parties
should be severely punished.
Death of Mrs. Goldsworthy.
Mrs. Kate Nevada Goldsworthy, :wife
of Paul Goldsworthy, died this morning at her home on West Broad street.
Some time ago deceased had a cancer
removed from the breast, and since
then has been afflicted + with lung
‘trouble, She was a véry estimable lady,
a native of the State, and 33 years of
age. A husband and three small children survive her. The remains will be
taken to Los Gatos tomorrow by her
parents, who were with her when she
died. i[t isa very sad case.
Shot the Horse,
Last night a couple of young men
were returning from Grass Valley to

One of the men drew. his pistol, intending to take ‘a shot at the dog. Just as

a license-tag, whether he be awelltrained setter'or a measly hound,
makés tracks in the opposite direction

his tail between his legs and fairly
yelping in terror.” .
“That’s a dog-oned queer thing,” ‘said
our reporter. . “How iis agarrsceees
for it?” :
“Account for it? I can’t socount tor
it. “Maybe the pesky animals have a
dog language and tell each other to
look out for the poundmaster ‘unless
‘their owner has put a tag about their
neck. Once in awhile I seem to find
an exception to the rule..A. dog. with
no collar apparent lets: me -catch him
with the greatest ease.. But as soon ‘as

wagon I never see any dogs except
those with tags on. The other fellows .
. . 8ee me first. My wagon is not a scarecrow, but it isa scare-dog, and don’t
you forget it.”
Then the. poundmaster assamed a
dog-ged look of determination and remarked:“T have fooled a few of the four-legged sharps, however, and Iam going to
‘work my facket until they get on to it.
‘Instead of trying to catch the dogs my-.
self I send my boy.out. Dogsand boys
own to a sort. of kinship »or «brotherly

dogs come up to my boy for an ‘every-.
day greeting and before they know it
he has a rope around their neck and
they are captives. My only fear is that
they will soon spot my boy as ‘quickly
as they spot me. So far he has caught
five dogs.to my one.”
Our poundmaster is not a dogmatic
man, ordinarily, but in the present instance he insists on holding the dogee a meeting of the Cabinet Council to. visiting friends Mrs. Bartlett commencae, Chat Come are Seeley
If his admiration for their dog sense
increases, there is danger that he. will
fall into a description of their merits
in dog-gerel verse, in which case he
himself will have to be impoundéd.
The last our reporter saw of the new
city official ‘was while he was on a dogtrot up the street in the effort to overhaul a shaggy Scotch terrier that looked
as though it never had a master; but
which evidently had a great horror’ of
dog catchers.

Say No, Young Maa.
It is an excellent thing to be able to
say no, young man. It is a grand
thing to be able to go into the company of other young people and feel
that you have strength enough and
home training enough to refuse to do
a méan.and contemptible act, and to
know that by refusing, you bring honor . wife
upon the head of your father and
mother, who have labored so faithfully
that you might be placed in a position .
to enjoy life and be a man among men
when you shall have come to the full
refusal to do wrong than the mere
matter of thought of self. No young
man or young woman can afford to
act of son or daughter, who should be
a shield rather than the cause of a
curse. R
