What the Barber Pole Represents.
The barbers of long ago were barber
surgeons, but the rapid advance of surgical science has caused them. to fall

Travel.
Travel frequently improves the human being, and it does the same for

there is the case of cottonseed ‘kernels

2 A Deathbead Question, ;
Not long before his death P. T. Barhum summoned his lawyer to the side
pt the couch where he. was lying, Pty .
“about a certain matter, and I want to
consult you. My ‘neighbor keeps peafly over into my yard, which they are
here. Would those eggs belong to me.
or could’ my neighbor compel me to
give them up?” ‘
The lawyer, having duly scatched his
head, answered: “Well, Mr. Barnum,
[ must take time to look into this matter. But the beat thing for you to do
would be to keep the eggs and let your
neighbor sue for their possession. In
that way your rights would be determined and we should have a very valtable test case.” :
“Well,” said’ Mr. Barnum, “while you
tre looking into the matter will you
find out how it would be if the eggs
were laid by peahens?” The lawyer
Swore softly to himself, but never
made any investigation.
Considerate.
An Albany lawyer with a penchant
for billiards had occasion recently to
visit a small town. While there, seeking to pass the time, he found a new
and excellent billiard table. Upon his
inquiring if there was anybody about
who could play the landlord referred
him to one of the natives, who may
be called John Jones because that isn’t
his name. They played several games,
but the result was against the Albany
lawyer. Try as he might, the countryman won.
“Mr. Jones,” he remarked, “I have
quite a reputation at home. They consider me a good billiard player, but
I'm not in your class. May I inquire
how long you have played?’
“Oh, fer a spell back,” replied the
native. “Say, stranger, I don’t want to
hurt your feelin’s, but you're the fust
feller I ever beat.” :
The Silent Boatman,
“Who can swim? Who can swim?”
shouted a man who wanted to cross &
river in a boat. A crowd of boatmen
gathered round him, crying: “I can, stgnor! I can!” :
Only one was silent and remained in
his boat all the time.
“And can’t you swim?” inquired the
stranger.
“No,” was the man’s curt reply.
“Then you shall take me across,”
The gentleman had adopted this
method to escape the importunity of
rival boatmen in that part of the country. Perhaps also he shrewdly suspected that a man who could not swin
would be the safer pilot.—Capitan Fracassa, /

An Anecdote of Rev. Henry Clay Dean,
the Fiery Orator.
Judge Stiles tells me of a very
amusing incident he himself witnessed in Iowa, where Henry Clay
Dean was making one of his most
itnpassioned addresses before a large
outdoor audience. He was appeal.
ing with all the fervor of his great
eloquence to the grandeur of the
Democratic party, the glory of its
achievements, its patriotism and old
fashioned honesty. As he touched.
upon this point he defiantly ex:
claimed in tones which once heard
could never be forgotten, “I defy
and challenge any man in this vast
audience.to point out a single act of
extravagance in this or any other
Democratic administration.” This
was during President Buchanan’s
administration. Whereupon in the
rear part of the audience a man
arose and said, “I can point out
one.” “What was it? Point it out,
point it out,” defiantly retorted
ean, calmly folding his arms. “It
was’ when the Democratic rty
made the government pay ears
Clay Dean for praying in the United
States senate.”
Dean probably for the first time
in his life on the rostrum was nonplused. For a moment he was
speechless with rage, then, raising
his voice to a tone that carried it far
beyond the confines of that vast audience and shaking his fist at the
fellow, exclaimed, with the ferocity
of a wounded tiger: “You are a liar,
sir; you are a liar, sir! My prayers
might be instrumental in saving all
but such hypocrites to religion and
such renegades to society as you.
All such are beyond the sovereign
of God.” It is useless to say
at the man wilted under the re ly
made by Mr. Dean. . No one bia
heard of him since. He should have
known the buzzsaw was in full motion. Mr. Dean was the quickest
man in repartee I ever knew. He
touched and killed, smiled and buried.—Kansas City Journal.
