Since then, with 4,000 prospectors coming in in1897 and 40,000 coming in in 1898, and scouring the country, not only all, about ‘the Klondike, but all ap and down to Yukon, not another rich creek has been discovered, so far as proved. Of course, Dominion promises Well; so does Sulphur, and lately great reports come from Thistle ‘creek, which-flows-into the Yukon on the right bank 100 miles abeve Dawson. But none of these creeks have been proved up. The most important development made has been in the bench claims along El Dorado, Bonanza,Hunker and Dominion. The trial of Robert Hooper for the murder of Mark Casey began in the Superior Court this morning. At noon the following had been obtained as jerors: L. A. Jewett, B. C, Waite, J. M. Mnrphy, Wm. McLean, Samuel Eddy, find gold enough to prove that the ereeks will pay to work by cheaper methods, but hardly wages now. Out of 18,000 claims now located in this neighborhood not over 800 have. been proved rich enough to return tbeir Owners more than good wages. The whole country wiJl in time be cations and hydraulic mining—and the output will be immense, probably as great‘as from any country inthe world. This applies to the country all along the Yukon, down through Alaska as far as Rampart City and beyond. In Alaska the miner is not robbed by the Government, gets larger claims, pays less for supplies; generally speaking the minés are more easily worked and are as good as here, excepting, of course, El Dorado and Bonanza. I would advise the miner who knows his business to try Alaska. I do not think that this winter will show up another rich creek unless it be Thistle or some other new one. Since the Klondike excitement started you have heard of dozens of creeks proved as rich as Ei Dorado, acworked by cheaper methods—modifi-. : exander Pope’s “Essays on Criticism.” I hope the disease will pass away, and that he may not become a charge upon the county. Governor Gage is credited with having stated that he will approve of a law fixing not more than twenty districts in the State which . will of course have to be properly distributed. They areto receive reasonable appropriations, the total not to exceed $80,000 annually. A bill has been introduced in both Houses and referred to the committee on Agriculture who are expected to make a favorable report. If the bill passes Nevada, Placer and Sierra counties will probably be in one district. ~+ 738 Got the Wrong Town. Mrs. R. Bonanza does not compare with them. El Dorado is great. A dozenof the E] Doradoclaims will yield a million each, and probably more of them, Then, the benches on french hill and Skookum and Gold hill are marvelous. They are not prospected yet, but are turning out very rich pay. But when you leave that little strip along El Dorado and Bonanza you find nothing great so far as proved. Certainly nothing as good or better than the Alaska mines at Birch Creek or in the Forty Mile country has been found off El Dorado and Bonanza. Birch Creek and Forty Mile districts and others along the Yukon in Alaska, are being éxploited this winter by nearly _10,000-miners, and-many of them are working diggings that have for many years been known to be worth at least wages, and many new creeks are reported to prospect very well. Several thousand men are on the Koyukak. Supplies in Alaska are comparatively plentifal and well distributed, and cheaper than at Dawson. 0 the outlook for govd returns there is the best. Then it may be said that a larger proportion of the men in Alaska are real miners, and not rainbow chasers. + e@e o --Made the Conductor Stop.
