at = VOL. LXVI--NO. 10243 NEVADA CITY. CALIFORNIA, MONDAY BVENING, FEBRUARY 5, 1894. Established Sept. 6, 1860, by N. P. Brown & Co. anime. . eee THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT] Published Every Evening, except Sunday. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. SERVED BY CARRIERS AT 15 Cts. per Week or 60 Cts. per Month . ibis WHEN PAID IN ADVANCE $ SIX DOLLARS PER YEAR. A BIG NUMBER. The Grass Valley Union’s Midwinter Fair Edition. The Midwinter Fair edition of the Grass’ Valley Union appeared yesterday, It contains ten pages, a large portion of which is filled with interesting reading matter regarding the industries ‘and resources of Nevada county: Lengthy articles on Nevada City and Grass Valley furnish valuable information.to-strangers who may be: seeking homes or investment, the mining review of the two districts being very complete. "This special number of the Union. is-eynbellished with numerous half-tone engravings of public buildings and scenery, including the Court House, view of Nevada City at the present time, bydraulic mining scene, etc. Mr. Prisk, the publisher, is deserving of praise for the enterprise he has shown in getting eut this edition, which is the largest paper ever published in the county, Weather. A sudden changé in the weather has taken place since yesterday morning. Then the air was as mild andthe sunshine as genial as in springtime. Later the clouds obscured the orb of day, a chilliness pervaded the air, and what promised to be a remarkably pleasant day vanished before the invading elements. At night Old Bereas aird his forces held high carnival for awhile, their efforts being’ successful ‘in hastening the’ rainstorm which followed. Today there has been a mixture of rain and sn@w, with generally strong indications for a continuation of the storm. Forgot ‘* Where He Was At.’’ The most absent minded mian in the world has been found at Grass Valley. He went to his telephone the other day in one of his abstracted moments and rang himself up, saying: ‘‘ Hello! Go up to Gaylord’s grocery store at the county seat and get me some of them low prices-T've-heard so much about.” ——— + vane ‘ Bombs and Firecrackers. The Chinese new year vegan this morning and for the next two weeks the event will be celebrated almost without interruption. It is a festive occasion with the heathens, and the racket they make, although some* whaf annoying to the rest of mankind, is greatly enjoyed by them. — -22@e oAnother Dividend. The direc tors of the Morning Star: mine, situated at lowa Hill, met Friday and’ declared a dividend of $4 per share. The mine is in a splendid condition. Stare or Onto, Crry oF 'ToLeDo,{ . By the Daily: Tidings. his To visitors Grass Valley today presents a lively scene, beside some towns of this State. Of course the Eastern towns are ‘‘not in it” in a financial way. Onevery hand can be seen new cottages or cottages and residences ‘in the process of erection, Our city is growing in every direction. New dwellings are being built on the West, on the South : tract, which was subdivided but afew monthe since, has already two completed dwellings thereon and two more are being erected as fast as the carpenters ean do the work. Our City Fathers have much to attend te this coming Spring and Summer. The water system should be extended to that part of the city recently admitted by: a’ vote of the people and the new streets to be opened . should also be supplied with mains as rap~ idly as possible. Our streets need much repairs and sidewalks should also receive notice. The large tracts ef land knewn as the Hill and Barker gardens will all be used for building lets in'a short time and streets will have to be made through ‘them. Our volunteer fire department is one of the best in the State, but sheuld be enlarged. The residents of that part of the city known as Boston Ravine, as soon as the water mains are. laid, should organize a fire company for bettér protection. The sewerage question needs attention this Spring and if the city continues to grow this will be an absolute necessity and will have to be put in at any cost, The dozens of new houses will add much to our taxable property and the Trustees . should keep abreast of the times. The’ coming ball of the firemen should receive liberal support at the hands of the property owners, as the work of the fireman is a ‘aber of leve.”” During the coming Spring and Sumimer many uew mining enterprises —are to be inaugurated, which will give work to many men and thereby inerease the circulating medium among the different bukinesses, Let us all lend a helping hand and Grass Valley will soon be worthy of the name ef ‘‘city.” ia aah ane No orwexr sarsaparilla has the merit to hold the confidence of entire communitie year after year, as has Hood’s Sarsaparilla.
