THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT -¢ Brown & Calkins, Publishers. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1894, “SUDDEN DEATH Of-Patrick Rippingham at Grass Valley Yesterday. Patrick Rippingham, aged 67 years, and a former resident\of Virginia City, Nevada, died very suddenly Sunday about 12:30 pe. M. at the Office of Dr.-W. G. Jones, Grass Valley. but-Sunday morning he complained of feeling unwell. About a quarter past 12 he visited Dr. Jones’ office and sat down to wait for the doctor, who arrived ~in a few minutes. Mr. Rippingh’am commenced to explain his trouble by saying, ifeel_ much pain here,” at the same time tdpping himself over the heart. sooner ‘out ‘of his mouth than he fell back, gasped two or three ties anddied before the doctor could reach him. “An autopsey was held on the body and it was found that a large sack had grown on the side-of the heart and had filled with blood. When Rippingham tapped . his: breast the. sack broke, flooding the heart and causing instant death. The body is now at the Undertaking It will be embalmed and shipped to Virginia City for Rooms of Daniels & Hocking. interment. OO ey A DISPUTE. Smartsvile’s Right to Premiuns. Contested by Newcastle. There is never an award of premiums at a Citrus Fair, or any other Fair,-without some complaints afterward. The Citrus Fair ‘at _ the Park is ‘no exception.to ‘the rule, say? the 8. F. Bulletin. Robert Jones of New. ‘castle has entered a protest against the award of the premium on limes to the Excelsior Water and Mining Company of Smartsville, Yuba county. It appears that the Committee on Awards had decided to give the first premium to an exhibit of limes made by C. M, Silva of Newcastle. But the committee was informed, on what it believed to be sufficient authority, that the fruit; though grown-by Mr. Silva, had been sold by him to Robert Jones of Newcastle. that the fruit competing for premiums must be grown and owned by the person in whose waine it is entered the committee ruled out the limes exhibited by Mr. Silva: The award was given to the next best exhibit of limes—that grown at Smartsville. The dispute over the matter will have at least. one good effect.. it will serve to ca)) General attention to the fact that limes are grown in Northern California, This fact is not generally known. The lime.is the most tendér of the citrus fruits, Both the tree and the fruit are more susceptible to injury from. frost than the lemon tree or its fruit, which in turn or more tender than the ‘orange tree and its fruit. There are bearing lime trees not only at Neweastle and’ Stiartsville, but also at Porterville and other points in the foothills of Northern and Central California, No doubt the are many localities strung along the great thermal belt of the foothills of the Sierra where the lime could be successfully and profitable cultivated, As the rules provide, in etfect, eee Bananas, Dates and Cocoanuts just received today at Foley’s. {5-3 _ + #0 + -The Pipe Broke. Messenger: Last Friday just before noon ait accident eccurred at O’Keefe and Crowley’s hydraulic mine, a little below Loganville, in which two men lost their lives. The mine being worked was a very small one and yielded hardly enongh to keep its owners in the necessities of life. It seems that Crowley. and Thomas Shelly, a man who was working injthe claim, were piping and keeping-the debris moving when the bank, which is composed of rotten slate and loam, suddenly gave way and covered up the two unfortunate men. Dennis O'Keefe witnessed thé accident from a distance and immediately gave the ~ alarm. Willing hands soen removed the dirt from the men but théy were both dead when found, The bodies were taken to Sierra City and buried last Sunday, Shelly by the Odd Fellows and Crowley by the citizens. Jehn Crowley was a native of Ireland and aged about 62 years, He was naturalized in the Nevada County District Court in September, 1859. Thos, Shelly was for many years a resident of Goodyear Creek and Goodyear Bar, but. had been working in the place where he was killed for about a year, He was a native of Ireland and aged 6) years, He was naturalized in the Sierra County District Court-in July,1857., Both-men were well liked and leave hosts of friends. tended. Mestetter’s Stomach Bitters, disciplines the rebellious organ thoroughly. Indigestion arises from weakness of the stomach, and the food in ‘it, fer want of the power to digest, d mposes and acidities, giving rise to heartburn, flatulence and pain, besides a multitude of symptems both changeful and perplexing. But peace soon reigns when the great stomaéhic is resorted to amd used with persistence. Pepsia gives rise te merbid discomposure of mind, and even sleeplessness and hypocondria in chrenic cases, Te the complete dismissal of these theBitters is fully adequate. Liver complaint, constipation, debility, rheu: matism and malaria are completely subdued by this genial medicine, The funerals on Sunday were largely atLAW: AGAINST SENTIMENT. Lerd Herschell’s Bill Eliminating Romance From Breach of Promise Buits, The lord chancellor, I hear, is credited with the intention of preparing a bill to do away with sentimental breach of promise actions and to’ limit the right of invoking the law in such matters to cases where it can be proved that actual pecuniary loss has been incurred y reason of the unfulfilled promise, If Lord Herschell’s bill ever becomes an act, every shred of romance will of course be eliminated from such actions as come before the courts after it has passed, and breach of promise will lose the fascination which it has go long exercised upon the public mind. On. the other hand, juries will be spared the delicate and invidious task of estimating the value of a lacerated heart in current ‘coin of the realm, and counsel will be relieved of the necessity of talking a great deal of sentimental nonsense that must be terribly trying to their sense of humor.—Lady’s Pictorial. Ceylon Tea. [t appears that. some of the Ceylon attempt to obtain a sale for their teaseed in the London market. A parcel of seven’ bags of that article was offered at the drug sales recently, but no one seemed to know what to do with it, and although the broker declared his belief that the drug was ‘‘a favorite medicine in China”’ the audience remained unmoved. Nevertheless the teaseed might have been worth purchasing for the sake of the bland oil which it contains, to-the extent of about 85 per cent by weight, and which resembles olive oil in’color and somewhat in taste, The seeds are about the size of a cherry stone, subglobular in shape and of a deep brown color. The oil would be useful for burning or lubricating. — London Chemist and Druggist. Branding Criminals In China.Finding that long terms of imprisonment and flogging do not check robbery and piracy and systematic practice of impesition-on-strangers-in-the nature of
thievery in the Soochow district, the authorities have resolved to try brand-' ing. For the first offense the thief is to be branded on the right cheek, and for the second on the left cheek. The brand is to be the Chinese sign for the word thief. As the Chinese have a superstitious horror of all facial disfigurement, the belief is entertained that the new punishment will check the criminal element.—Sacramento Record-Union, : The Pullman Brothers.
