Severe Punishment.
Marysville Democrat; The Deputy
Sheriff who went to Nevada City Saturday
armed with a warrant. for Henry. Hartley,
the confidence sharp, returned yesterday
with. his prisoner. The trail of Hartley
took place in Justice Garber’s Court at 10:30
o'clock this morning. The session was
brief, as Hartley was in a contrite mood, and
anxious to confess his guilt,
The complaint as read by Judge Garber
valued the stolen diamend scarf-pin at $15,
the gold chain at $6, and the locket at $9,
all of which is the property of Joe Hirsch,
the complaining witness.
Hartley waived the formal questions of
the Court and said he was ready to plead.
He entered a plea of guilty, and continuing,
said’: “I am sorry for what I have done; I}.
‘know that I did wrong, and I deserve all
the punishment that can be inflicted upon
me,” .
‘Before pronouncing sentence Judge Garber
remarked that he had more reepect fora
man who stole outright than for one who
betrayed confidence as Hartley had done.
District Attorney McDaniel said there
were no extenuating circumstances in the
case; he could not say much in the prisoner’s
favor as he knew he was guilty of other and
like offenses, Z
The prisoner. waived time and the~ Court
imposed a fine of $100, in default of which
Hartley will serve 100,days in the county
jail.
Hirsch has been informed that he can recover his jewelry by remitting $4 to a barkeeper in Nevada City, with whom Hartley
’ pawned it.

that form a necessary part of the wellequipped swillery. Ordinarily an outfit of
this kind attracts but little notice, In
Nevada City, however, there is a rig used
for this purpose that is the object of more
than usual observation from the general
public, for the reason that the driver thereof
isa woman, Every night, in all sorts of
weather, the wagon, which is drawn by an
old white horse that was once the choice
pick in a first-class livery stable, makes
its regular rounds, gathering in the hog feed

taurants. The woman only drives, being
accompanied always by a boy or man, who
takes charge of the .cargo, She handles
the ribbons, while he handles the swill,
_ Blected For Four Years.
The Supreme Court will soon render a
decision on the election law, and settle the
question as to whether there is to be an
election for county officers this fall. In
the case.of the County Assessor and the
Superintendent of Schools the present incumbents will not be affected, as according
to either the old or the new law they were
elected to serve four years, ;
Very Encouraging. y
