The Call of yesterday has an article relative to changes to be made in the line of the Central Pacific. Railroad in Placer county. It says: “Wm. Hood, Chief Engineer’ of the Central Pacific Railroad, is authority for the statement that certain towns on the line of the read in Placer‘county will be left off the line when the road is shortened and put upon easier grades. When asked to. mention the towns Mr. Hood said he could not say as yet. He was asked if Auburn, Oolfax, Penryn, Newcastle and Loomis would be affected. He replied that he would not give definite information. A new line has been surveyed from. much talk in Auburn and the other places as to the probable changes. It is represented that the new line is more likely to be run through Auburn upon the ridge above it. It seems almost certain that Towle, Dutch Flat, Colfax and the other stations to Auburn will be cut off of the main line, and the present road will be used for local travel. To Dredge the American River What is known as a Dryland dredge is about to be built on the banks of the North Fork of the American river, seven miles from Colfax, with the intention of working the tailings fed into this section of the American from Indian and other canyons in the vicinity. The grognd is said to be rich, and the promoters have great expectations of success by the introduction of this method of dredging. Under this pate ent the machinery is built on a platform on the surface of the ground, the excavation being made with a scoop type of dredge and handled by the derrick process. The dirt is elevated from sixteen to eighteen feet above surface, passing over grizzly separating coarse from fine, the latter eventually passing through a system of sluices fitted out with all modern gold saving appliances. ‘The power used will be steam, with wood for fuel. Each scoop lifts one cubie yard, and its working capacity is thirty cubic yards per hour. By this method it is claimed the bed rock riffles can be cleaned up effectively. When it is reached the pit is pumped dry, allowing perfect freedom in saving the coarse gold. The elevation of the dirt gives plenty of fall, andas clean water is used the fine gold gets a better chance to settle. H.J. Barton and A. La Bud are patentees of the dredge. Stop Wasting Water ! Complaints are being made that there is an unnecessary waste of water all over the city, and IT MUST BE STOPPED. People should be careful and use the water economically or extreme measures will be resorted to. Obinatown is all ready for the opening of the New Year festivities, which will be opened tomorrow with bomb, firecracker and:punk. Yesterday acommittee of Chinese merchants applied to the Board of City Trustees for permission to“‘burn powder” and make lots of noise, The Board granted the request, with a strict understanding that due caution is to be observed. That ie that care must be taken not to scare horses or injure anyone in any way. This the committee guaranteed to do .as far as possible, and after 12 o’clock tonight the din and noise will begin. The “fun” will have a two-weeks’ ran, amd the wily Heathen will eat, drink and make “goo-goo eyes” at his lady love. There will be more firecrackers burned this year than usual, and the attendance of OChinamen from outside points promises to be correspondingly large. Times in the local Chinese colony for. the last year have been pretty good, and this fact will cut a big figure in making the celebration satisfactory to the Mongolian’s idea of the fitnéss of things, Naval Strength. Sir Charles W. Dilke contributes. to the Oosmopolitan for February an article on “The Naval Strength of Nations,” which gives not only a most ioteresting and comprehensive account of the navies of the great powers, but alsoa clear insight into world politics. Few men possess such knowledge as from years of experience in a diplomatic and political oareer, The article is se broad in scope and straightforward in treatment that it will be read with interest not alone by States. men bat by everyone whose thoughts travel beyond the immediate wants of a single day. ai, A great many people think if they had plenty’of money, they would do nothing but travel.
