During most of the half century in which mining has been prosecuted on the Pacific Coast the popular notion of the industry has been associated with the auriferous placers. ‘Indeed, the impression still prevails in thé minds of many-speople that mining in California lacks vitality and that the life of the industry is ebbing with the assumed gradual exhaustion of the gold-bearing deposits The impression is, of course, misleading and is due to ignorance of the mineral resources of,the State. Even expert estimates of the extent and capacity of the placer deposits have proved deceptive because improved mechanical devices and many new dis coveries made in recent years have al tered materially the workable area otf the gold-bearing gravels and correspondingly lengthened the lease of life of this branch of the iudustry. Although we have spent fifty years exploring them we are far from possessing an exact knowledge of the ancient river beds of the State. When the discovery is made, after working one of these ancient river channels for forty years or more, that another channel carrying psy dirt quite as rich as the one worked out is lying thirty or forty feet deeper, it constitutes a renewal of the life of the mine and illustrates how the vitality of gravel mining.is often underestimated. We have had occasion recently to note such a change in the prospects of one of the best-known gravel mines in the State. Such a discovery upsets all previous calculations of the endurance of the industry not only in that particulat locality, but in contiguous unexplored territory which is probably traversed by the newly disvcovered channel. A correct estimate of the vitality of the mining industry cannot, however, be based on the gravel deposits, for it may be truly said that there is a comCapetown: dated today say that up to this morning nothing has been heard from Buller.: Field Marshal Roberts’ advices are‘to the effect that there is no change in the situation. It is generally believed bere however that a fight is on, but the wish is doubtless father to thethought. The silence so far as any definite information is concerned probably represents the lull that usually precedes an important movement. Truce Declared In Kentucky. [Special to the Daily Transcript.] LovuisvILLt, Feb. 6.—The peace cohterence held last night between seven representatives of the Republican administration and seven of the Democratic resulted in an agreement upon a set of provisions intended to settle the differences now existing between the two factions. The resolutions provide for the General Assembly ratifying the resolution seating Goebel, Taylor to submit; that all members unite in modifying the election law so as to provide for non-partisan Election Boards; that matters stand as they now are till Monday; that nothing be done to hinder the meeting of the Assembly; that the State Central Board meet and adjourn frém-: day to ddy till Tuesday without acting upen any of the minor offizes; that all troops be removed from the State Capitol at once; that Republican officials bave immunity from charges of treason and from court martial. Governor Taylor refuses for . the time being to sign the agreement, saying he wishes to consider it carefully. Frankrort, Feb. 6.—The news of the agreement reached at Louisville is received with gratification. The strain of the last ten days has been great, putable termination to that branch of it. Its greatest promise lies in the and anything lessening the tension is metalliferous veins intersecting the permanent formations. And in that branch of the industry mining has been revitalized not only in Calitoruia, . but all over the-Pacitic Coast. For ex . ample, in Southern California the existence of gold inthe placer formations of San Francisquito and Soledad can. yons was known years before the more . important discovery was made by Marshall near ‘Coloma, but the industry had no real vitality in that section until vein mining in the Randsburg district, which is.of,, very.recent develop. ment, proved profituble. Be‘ore that . occurred mining, in Southern Califor. nia was confined almost exclusively to . the operation of the: Julian and Ban. ner mines of San Diego county, the working of the borax deposits in Death . A New Mining Device. The River Bed Mining Company has been incorporated, with Sacramento as the principal place of business. The Woodland Democrat says that the principal object of the incorporation seems to be to manufacture and sell a new device known as a safety mining caisson. Itis a cylinder which’ may be lowered to the bed of a.stream, and in which bedrock, mining potholes and crevices made inaccessible by water or by other methods may be examined. The principle involved consists in dispelling the water from th> compartments by means of compressed air forced through a tabe or combination 31-1w.
