Disturbing the Peace,
Thomas Brannigan was arrested Jast even:
ing by Marshal Getchell on a charge of dis~
turbing the peace. It seems that Brannigan
».went into Feldkirchner’s saloon, on lower
Commercial street, and became involved in
a quarrel with James Kelly. During the
scuffle that ensued Brannigan slashed at
Kelly with a pocket knife and succeeded: in
cutting the latter's coat and pants, but did
not inflict any weunds,
This morning Brannigan was taken before
Justice Carr, who imposcd a fine ef $20 or
twenty days’ imprisonment in the county
jail. Failing to pay the fine he was taken
to jail, :
Glad to Get, Home.
Several months ago the spies of the AntiDebris Association, after making many unsucceastul attempts, succeeded in catching
a company of Chinese miners hydraulicking
at Quaker Hill, Two of the principal men
were kidnapped and taken to Marysville,
“where they were afterwards sentenced to
250 days’ imprisonment in the Yuba county
jail. A few days since these Ckinamen
were discharged from juil and refurued to
this city. One of them informed a business
man that he was glad to get back. He
said that during their long<erm in jail they
were allowed but one hour a day in the

The upper tunnel is in about 250 feet and

ledge is about the same as in the tunnel,
-\The ore taken from these tunnels and

Mr. Kennedy has made: several shipments
of ore to smelters and has received good
returns, The first sixty tons of ore werked
‘in an arastra yielded $1509 in gold and the
tailings assayed $20 in gold and 17 ouncee
of silver, Eighteen tons shipped to Portland brought $1593, . Twenty-three tons
shipped to Salt Lake returned $1948.46.
Thirteen tons and a half shipped te Reno
yielded $706.62, Three tons sent to Reno
brought $124.27.
Kennedy & Co. also own a mill site and
water right, consisting of ten inches in the
dryest. season sufficient to run mill and engine.
Woed is.quite plenty and sella at $2.50

These men are-all old Nevada countyans, .
Mr. Wilkinson at one time was owner of
the Dutch Flat and Nevada City stage line
and Mr. Benton used--to reside at-Eureka
in the early days.
There has been over two hundred locations
made in this district and some of the leads
prospect better than the Imperial. There
are about eighty miners in camp, mostly
prospecting,
A smalimilt has just béen completed belonging to a man from Battle Mountain,
named Jenkins. It consists of one Huntington mill and four pane and two settlers
te work by the Boss or’ centinuous process
of amalgamation, A man named Webster
from Mexico is mill-man and an old Nevada
county mun named Lem Atkins is enginser,
He used to run the engine at the Banner
and Sneath & Clay mines in the ’sixties.
There isa boarding house and store in

invested as yet, everyone working his own

has a few dollars to go to prospect,
A stage leaves Winnamucca every Wednesday noon and goes as far as Guthrie's
Ranch and Thursday continues to Kennedy,
where it arrives at four o'clock in the afters
noon, and leaves Kennedy for Winnemucca
every: Monday, one mail a week.
Most of the miners in the place live in
dugouts or tents, as lumber is worth $36
per thousand, This camp has better prospects of becoming a second Virginia than
any camp in Nevada, as the ore is mostly
gold bearing and high grade,
The country rock is soft granite, the leads
have clean well-defined walls and the ore is
soft and easily taken out. ‘The only question now is whether the ore is free enougli
to work without smelters. If it isnot there
are. several parties willing to put them up.

army and navy officers, of private citizens in all ranks of life, gravitate to
the Capital City as the pleasantest place
they know of to pass the autumn of life.
The diplomatic corps comprises several hundred more or less idle and fashionable. men and women. Literary and
scientific men, especially those enjoying
incomes and independence from inherited or other sources, are numerous in
Washington. Always the city contains
thousands of ‘visitors attracted by the
peculiar interest which attaches to the
seat of government.
Is it any wonder that we have here an
ease loving and an ease enjoying population?’ Are you. surprised that Washington laziness has become proverbial
throughout the country? Do you marvel that our streets and avenues are rialtoes in which comfortableness, fashion,
superficiality, even insincerity, are constantly displayed?
The street life of Washington is always interesting. The good d
gives an air of elegance to the thoroughfares, which, with their famous shade
