Naked Lamps Still Used In Many Mines, The most deplorable featuré about the calamity at the mining town of Dayton, Tenn., is the fact that 16 men lost their lives needlessly. They used the dangerous open lamps in their work, regardless of the record of death from Auch carelessness with which the history of coal mining is strewn. As Jeng’ago as vy invented a in coal minés, ple that flame, in passing throngh i wire meshes, loses so much of itsdfeat as to leave it incapable of igniting inflummable gases. Yot at this lgté day there are mines employing res of men, in which naked] light6 are used, ready to ignite~éxplo© gases at any momentand, send the workmen into eternity. The ‘company which operates’ the Dayton mines has decided that hereafter no open lamps will be allowed. This decision comes too late to be of any benefit to the 16 men who are dead and to the 16 households which have been plunged ‘into mourning. The calamity should’ be a .warning to other mine owners and. to other _ miners. — Pittsburg ChronicleTelegraph. ~~ gsc The Turnstile Defenses of Chicago, Bae if British war vessels should get intO lake waters it does not follow that . At 6 a dog isin his zenith, and oan be taught bpt’ little more, but by this time, although he cannot speak, except. in a dof dumb language, he knows everything that is said about him —thatis; if he has been the constant companion of a kind master and misne gig We. are too loath to admit that a dog can-understand quite a deal that is spoken, especially if it concerns himself. [ am sure that, like myself, many of my readers could send me anecdotes in proof:of this.:' The following is sent me. by a lady. It is worth reading: ~~ ‘*My husband had at onetime a very fine collie, which seemed to understand conversation ly. On one occasion he told his housekeeper that he was going to-ride next day to his father’s place, L30 miles away, and, turning to his dog, said, ‘You will stay at home. *Next moruing the dog was not to beseen, and when his:master arrived at his destinaion the dog bad got there first, and was “peacefully resting under atable. The strangest thing was that the dog was ‘aken to my husband’s home by rail, tnd had never traveled on foot between ibe two places.’’—Edinburgh Scotch# Carlyle’s “Most Fool” Phrase. : . ‘Where, how and when did Carlyle deslare that his countrymen were-“‘mostly fools?’ According to Mr. Justin Mearthy, in an article in this paper, as lgo, rather vdaen 2 f ‘ecording to Mr. ‘raneis Espinasse in his recently rearinted. articles from The Bookman, it vas in an‘appeal (printed in The Spevator) to Lord John Russeil, then premier, to. do something for the industrial improvement of Ireland.
