An Ideal Parlor.
This concentration of interests in
a room is by no means an unworthy
study. .Many rooms are spoiled
without it. It has been successfully
accomplished in a parlor overlookis taken up with a large bay window.
The other side, at right angles to it,
is taken up by the fireplace sunk in
a recess and so carrying out the line
of the window. The study of the
mistress has been to make two centers to her room, one around the
window, which is always charming
by day, and one around the fireplace
for the night. Her table, therefore,
with its writing materials and its
reading lamps, has been placed in
front of the fireplace, with two easy
chairs: before it, where she and her
husband can read when the logs are
lighted. On the left of the table
there is a sofa facing the window
with its pretty view, while arored
before it are more chairs. Here she
takes her afternoon tea.—Harper’s
Bazar.
ORCHARD AND GARDEN.
Grow few varieties of Soni, but grow
them well.
A good surface harrow to keep the
orchard mellow and clean is of benefit.
The matted row way of raising
strawberries is often called the lazy
man’s system. 2
Thorough surface cultivation will
prevent the growth of red raspberries
between the rows.
With the young orchard thorough tillage should be given all through the
‘early part of the growing season. Then
mulch well before hot, dry weatber
sets in.
Pear trees require rather less space
than any other fruit trees. Few of
them are of a spreading habit, the majority of them growing in a pyramidal
form. Still, ft is not best to.allow them
to grow too tall. Cut out the tops.
The drain of continual cropping is
Rever noticed so particularly in an orchard‘ until harvest time. The trees put
forth blossoms, and the fruit that fol‘lows seems.all right, but when the
fruit ripens too many culls. are found.
Arrested and Set Free.
Dr. J.H. ‘Hanaford says in.the Westtern Plowman: Ifthe first cough is
‘operly treated, the first step in the
direoti rection of consumption arrested, the
developed, the breath set free, id
not fear consumption.” Kemp’

napkins In Londen.
“A good A ee
ed at Americans who: either
their napkins under their chins or
drape them across their shirt bosoms at dinner,” said a man who has
just returned from London. “Ihave
come-to the conclusion that this is
not American, but English. I have
seldom seen napkins so used in the
od hotels and clubs in this counry, but in the Hotel Cecil, in London, around the dining table seemed
to be one vast expanse of napkins.
Without exaggeration, three-fourths
of the men whom I saw in the dining room had their napkins tucked
smoothly across their. shirt fronts.
It pleased me more than anything
thet I saw in London, not because
I approve of the practice, but because it is one of the things that
English writers a few years ago used,
to describe as Americanisms.’ The
men behind the napkins at the Cecil
were Englishmen, however, if accent and appearance count for anything.A New Disease.
A woman whose maid accompanied her to a vegetarian restaurant
in London was-soon the Reoipiaart of
a protest.
“But, Mary,” she argued, “the
food is palatable—you cleared your
plate—-and it is certainly wholesome. Why do you object ?”
“It ain’t that bad to taste,
‘ma’am,” responded Mary firmly.
“But I don’t call it wholesome}; no,
ma’am, not when they fill a body’s
plate with tomato and cabbage and
parsnips and potato all at once and
ive you fishball things without any
rae in ’em and goose things without
any goose in ’em and croquette
things made of mixed up greens.
Sure, ma’am, it gives me confusion
of the stomach !”
