The Union High School
O MANY OF OUR READERS genes We ae the team he,was driving ran away and
formed concerning the feasibility and method of
establishing a Union High School that a few words
concerning the manner of such establishmeni may. be
of real interest and value to those who care to see Nevada
City with a High School second to none in the State.
The following is in brief the law on the subject:
“When the heads of families equal in number to-a ma~
jority in each district residing in two or more contiguous
school districts in the same county * * shall unite ina
petition to the County Superintendent of Schools for the establishing and maintaining of a union high school district,
he shall, within twenty days after receiving said petition,
call an election for the determination of the question, and
shall appoint three qualified electors in each of the districts
petitioning to conduct the election therein. * *
lots at such election in each district shall contain the words
‘For the union high’school,’ and the voter shall write or print
after said words on his ballot the word ‘yes,’ or the word
‘no.’ * * *
“Within ten days after receiving the returns of said
election, the Superintendent of Schools shall combine the
votes ‘for,’ and ‘against’ the establishment of the high school!
district and declare such result by filing a certificate thereof’
with the County Clerk. * *
“If a majority of the votes cast in the districts petitioning fora union high school shall in the aggregate be in
favor of establishing and maintaining a union high et
therein, the County Superintendent shall, within fifteen days
after receiving the returns of the election held therein, dij
rect the Board of Sureties in each of said districts to call i
meeting of the qualified electors of their respective district
* %*
,
At said meeting the qualified electors shall in each
district select one representative. * * * *
“In union high school districts composed of
two school districts, the high school board shall be composéa
of one member elected from each district composing the high
school district. * * *”
There is at present maintained in Nevada City a Hig
school on a standing with the best in the State, accredited b
the University and increasing its list of accredited subject
each year.
.
More than twenty-five of its students come from outlying
districts and it seems to us that it will be as much to thd
interest of the outlying districts as it will be to Nevada City
to see maintained a school which shall be a source of pride
As far back as the year 1862 a High School was started
in this town, Is Nevada City now, after forty years of suc!
cess, willing to say that she has ceased to believe in highei
education? Is she willing to let her high school lapse?
No, we sincerely and confidently believe not. She wil;
rather say, “LET US UNITE TO FORM AN A No. 1 FULLY
EQUIPPED Union H1GuH ScuHoot.”?

The Sunday Question.
°
HE DIFFERENCE OF OPINION between people
on the Atlantic and those on the Pacific Coast in respect to the observance of Sunday are rapidly disappearing. Not many years ago it was assumed that
in time the Pacific Coast would conform to the Atlantic
Coast standard of Sunday observance. It seems, however,
that a more extended experience with the Pacific Coast idea
is bringing the most rigid of our Eastern friends to our way
of thinking. Aa example of this trend of Eastern thought
is found in a letter of Mr. George D. Chamberlain of Springcity. While Mr. Chamberlain is chairman of the Committee
of Massachusetts Congregational Churches on Sunday observance, he advocates the opening of libraries on Sunday,
and approves of Sunday excursions from the city to the
country. He would like to see every schoolhouse in a large
city open to the public on Sunday for purposes of recreation,
In some of the schoolrooms he would have such entertainments as concerts and illustrated lectures, and in others a
good assortment of children’s playthings: This letter leads
the New York Evening” Post to remark: “Only those who

The Cow Was Wild
Orovitte, Feb, 7—Mrs. Ed Snow was
at her home near the depot and badly
bruised and cut. The accident was
the resylt of some trouble with a calf,
It seems that Mr. Snow, who is down
from Kimshaw milked the cow this
morning and not -knowing the usual
practice made the mistake of turning
the calf loose. Later, when some boys
came to drive the cow to pasture, they
had trouble td separate the cow and
calf. Members of the family took a
hand epdafter a time the calf was
caught and tied up, The cow had: become frantic by this time, and when
Mrs. Snew appeared she rushed at her
and threw her inte-the alr. One born
penetrated the body inthe region of
the stomach, and for atime it was
feared she was badly hurt. She was
