TRLSPHOMNE No. 4.
A_ QUESTION OF WAGES.
Secretary Gage in -his Philadelph’a
to the constant assertion of silver oraaverage citizen ahd especially tbe
average laboring man. .He spoke of
various argametits which had been
advanced against our monetary standard, the favorite one being the asse:tion that “falling prices must be at the
cost of labor, since land and capital
will not engage in productivity except
upon the terms they themselves
dictate,” and that, “gold having a;preciated in value, prices of commod-}*
ities have fallen, and because of the
exacting power of land and capital the
evil effect has been felt by wages in the
form of a diminished share” “Now,”
said Secretary Gage, “if this statement
were true it would of necessity be evi@enced by. the actual fall in wage
pices. This brings the question to
tne test of fact. It has been asserted
upon authority and I believe it to be
upproximately true, that within the
period 1872—"91 prices have fallen un
average of 2744 per cent. I am ut
liberty, therefore, to adopt the same
authority as tothe course of wages. It
apears from the exhaustive figures of
the Commissioner of Labor, the anthcrity cited, that within the period 187.—
*J1 wages have ivcreased an average of
10 per cent. Taking the greater power
of wages to command things by reason
of their lower price, the economic acvantage guined by labor is still furth:r
enphasized. In 1872, $100 in gold
‘would bay a certain amount of living;
ia 1891, prices having fallen, $1(0
would buy 2714 per cent. more than it
did in 1872; and wages baving increased
1) per cent in the meantime, the san e
work which was paid $100 in 1872 réc-:ived $110 in 1891. From the double
udvantage of decreased prices and i:creased wages, it follows that in 1€91
the same labor would purchase 51 7-10
per cent. more of living than it did in
1872. Let usapply these advaptagss
by example. In 1891, the labor that
supported 15 people supported 10 in
1892. In 1891, from the same labor as
in 1872,a man living upon the same
scale would have over one-third of his
wages to put in bank or better provide
. for his family. I am further borne out
in this demonstration by the statistics
of savings banks covering the period
noder. consideration. Since 1871 tke
number of depositors in such institutions has increased from ,less than two
millions to more than five millions,
ad the average per capita saving in the
United States has increased 86 per
cent.” :
A BELIEVER IN THE DANCE.
A St. Louis clergyman, says the
News Letter, invites his congregation
todance. He is right. . Damnation by
dancing is the dogma .of the clumsy.
A wingless angel has to fly. There is
no more sin in moving to lively sounds
than there is in keeping step to a funeral march. The anti-dancer is jealous. He is ignored -by society. He
would beas much out of place in a bali
room as Mr. Greenway would be ina
treadmill.
As to the immorality of dancing,
there are two-legged animals who imagnations cannot rise above a dung hill.
The ballroom has, to say the least, as
fragrant. a reputation as the camp meeting. Society is the perfume of. civilization. Why should music, rythm
and grace be debasing ? Sam Jones
says “Dancing is hugging set to music.”
Sam Jones is a theological buzzard. He
knows 10 more of refined society than
an organ grinder knows of sheet music.
above his reach. Awkwarduess ‘hates
grace ; the uninvited, the invited. A
lovely girl swaying in unison with delicious music, is just as elevating as.an
old woman turning somersaults and
yelling “glory hallelujab.”
