Women and whistling are barred in ore mines in the Birmingham district, Alabama, if orders from the superintéddétits can prevail, Not that the saperintendents of ore mines in particular have an aversion to women and whistling, but it is becauce of the great superstition on the part of the negro miners, who almost exclusively work the ore mines of Alabama. It is the belief among the negroes who work in the ore minesthat if a woman’ enters the place or there is any whistling done where the men dig the product, that an accident {s going to happen as sure as fate. There is no better known ore mine superintendent in the State thau Captain John D, Hanby, who is in charge of the mines at Sloss on the Birmingham Mineral. He say that be has been in the business for yeare, that he has known it to follow as a sure thing that when a woman goes into a mine or there is whistiing heard there an aceident happens and somebody gets hurt. Now, Oaptain Hanby is not a superstitions man himself, but he admits that he has been so long around the mines and has heard of these stories so often that he has been led to thinking that way, too. “The last time a woman wert into our mines, said Oepteia Hanbsy,-‘'an scoldent follawad, and four men lost their lives. It was “la female book agent, and she went into the mines without permission. Occasionally a woman appears at the mines, and then there is trouble. The pegro miners will flock out of a mine like rats leaving a ship that is leaking when they hear that a woman has been in the place or that whistling has been done in the mine. We watch the negro women who fetch their husband’s meals and compel them to leave the pails at the mouth of the mines, Not for anything could they go into the mines, for the labor would be frightened for several days,”’ It is just the opposite in Oalifornie, for women are welcome Visitors to.the mines and are supposed to bring good luck, ; : A Costly Mistake.
