Some are big operators, supporting brokers by theli commissions. There are 1,100 mem bers of the Stock Exchange, and these represent brokerage and commission firms whose partnerships aggregate nc less than 1,452 ablebodied men. A clergyman in-New Jersey hired a man to act in the capacity of coachman and gardener. One day the clergyman bought a bottle of horse liniment and told the man to apply it to a lame horse according to the directions on the bottle. About an hour afterward he went to the barn and found Silas industriotsly dipping a spike into the liniment and then rubbing it against the horse’s Icg. “What are you doing that for?’ he asked. The man looked up with a smile of assurance. “Because,” said he, ‘’twas what it said in the directions on the bottle, but it’s slow work.” *You must have made a mistake, said the minister. “J have not,” answered the man in an aggrieved tone. “It says here on the bottle, ‘Apply with a large nail or tooth brush,’ and, as I had no toothbrush, I thought I’d better use this spike.” ” A Settler. The Purchaze of Diderot’s Library es ‘Catherine Il. of Russia, Empress Catherine II. of Russia was a great reader and a loyer of books. One of her services to letters in Russia was the purchase of ‘the libraries -of Voltaire and Diderot. She was a warm friend and admirer of these French philosophers, atid their work interested her because she was eager to learn new theories of politics and government Voltaire’s iibrary of about 7,000 volumes is now a part of the Russian imperial library in the Hermitage palace; and in the hall devoted to it is Hou don's statue of Voitaire. The.story of Catherine’s purchase of Diderot’s library is interesting. It is creditable to her tact and her generos: ity. Diderot named £15,000 as the price of his library. Catherine Il. of. fered him £16,000 and named as a con. dition of the bargain that her purchase should remain with Diderot until hit death. Thus Diderot, without leaving Paris, became Catherine’s librarian in his own library. As her librarian he was given a yearly salary of £1,000, One year this salary was not paid Then Catherine wrote to her librariar that she could not have him or her li brary suffer through the negligence o1 a treasurer’s clerk and that she shoul¢ send him the sum that she had se aside for the care and increase of he) library for fifty years. At the end o that period she would make new ar rangements. A check for £25,000 ac For Sale at a Bargain. The well known Cleveland Ranch consisting of 80 acres under U. S§. patent.
